Mirliton/forlorn hope goblins size?
« on: July 31, 2024, 07:47:33 AM »
Is anyone who owns the mirliton/forlorn hope goblins able to give me some idea what size they are, I'm looking for a few in that style that are around 20mm tall
On the lookout for 10mm Magister Militum Fantasy figures, halflings and woodelves in particular

They are generally quite big; some are just as big as the Grenadier orcs from the same period, and some are bigger still. All the hero types are rather chunky; I've used quite a few in the same units as Nick Lund orcs:

The guy second from the left is a Grenadier/Forlorn Hope goblin; as you can see, he's as big or bigger than the Grenadier orcs (1 and 5) but smaller than the giant orcs (3 and 4).

That said, the middle archer here is exactly 20mm from foot to hood top; of course, he'd be taller if he straightened up, and you can see that his friends are a bit taller:

That's a shame, I was hoping they would be more like the early citadel goblins at 20mm tops

Back to the drawing board...

How early are you thinking of with Citadel? The old Acropolis "Stuntrybe" goblins, now available from the Baggage Train, are quite a good match for the Citadel Fiend Factory goblins, I think (same kind of jowly faces).

For example, the figure on the left-hand end with the spear is Acropolis and the guy next to him is Citadel Fiend Factory:

And this is an Acropolis goblin leader with a Citadel goblin from the Goblin Raiding Party boxed set:

Oh - have you seen the rereleased Asgard orcs (by Jes Goodwin, no less!) from Alternative Armies? They're similar in style to the Forlorn Hope goblins, in that they're hunched and often hooded, but they're generally smaller and much more finely rendered (state-of-the-art sculpting, really, despite their vintage). Alternative Armies has just released a new batch, and they have measurements on the photos, which helps:

Also, Alternative Armies do some of the old Rieder Design orcs (now rebranded as Cro's goblin raiders and Cro's goblin spears), which are suitably sized with early Citadel goblins. In the first photo in my previous post, the figure second from the right is a Rieder Orc, though not one that's been rereleased yet:

Those photos don't do them full justice; like most of the Rieder stuff, they're very nice figures.

I do like those old Citadel fiend factory goblins. Especially the archer. I have been trying to find something similar in metal. A regular soldier (non-cartoony) type armoured goblin archer, but no luck so far.

Have you seen this Acropolis guy? I think he's similar to the Fiend Factory goblins, and he's an armoured archer too:

Those look like cool options

I'm looking for a far east/mongol look to tie in with a japanese fantasy setting

Have you seen the Dixon bakemono goblins? They're lovely old figures, by Mark Copplestone.

The smaller ones are stocky but smaller than a 28mm human; the larger ones are about the size of a Chronicle hobgoblin:

I think some of these would be perfect, I wonder how they mix with the early citadel cave goblins?

They mix in quite well. I actually have some Asgard/AA orcs and Chronicle cave goblins in the painting queue for use together in Mordheim (I'm using some Grenadier/Forlorn Hope and Dixon goblins too, but those are bigger).

This WIP shot might give you an idea. There's an Asgard/AA black orc at the front (with the green shield). Around him are Chronicle hobgoblins (much bigger than the cave goblins) and a Dixon goblin, but you can just make out the top of a cave goblin (with topknot) at the back on the lefthand side.

I should add that the Asgard orcs range considerably in size: the "great orcs" are the biggest (about the size of a Chronicle hobgoblin), with the "soldier orcs" the next largest. They go all the way down to fairly tiny creatures in the slave orcs, horde orcs and trackers.

If you happen to be in the USA Viking forge miniatures sell the range of Asgard miniatures as well. I've bought off them a few times before Alternative Armies started selling the Asgard range. Castings come out well.
And this is an Acropolis goblin leader with a Citadel goblin from the Goblin Raiding Party boxed set:

Wow Hobgoblin. That goblin on the right is exactly how I pictured the great goblin from the hobbit. I want it for no other reason than nostalgia (and that I'm drinking a beer which may be affecting my miniature needs, lol)

Haha! He's Snurd Hideflayer from the Citadel Goblin Raiding Party boxed set. He's usually quite easy to pick up on eBay; that boxed set must have sold well back in the day.
