Wurttemberg 28 mm
« on: August 11, 2024, 08:14:31 AM »
A different scale compared to my 6 mm Napoleonics.  The club have a campaign starting so I thought I’d join in with a minor nation that no one else has much of.  Wurttemberg has a nice variety of units and uniforms and historically performed well in 1809 and 1812.  It also fought with and against the French so is flexible.

I’ve gone for 1809 with VIII corps.  I’ve started with the light brigade with units selected for Black Powder but can be used for Sharpe Practice.  Individual models are based on 1.5 mm thick magnetic sheet and metal sabots used for the unit.  I’ve gone for 200 mm wide for a light unit with the main body 100 by 50 and 4 skirmish stands 50 by 25 mm.  This allows the unit to deploy in any formation quite flexibly and quickly.

Figures are Front Rank mostly painted with citadel contrast paints over a white on grey dry brushed base.

I’ll post some pics of the first units shortly

Impressive. My Grandfather was from Wurttemberg. Always glad when
someone does their army.

Thanks for the comments.  I will try to get some better photos of the troops, etc.  Hopefully they will get a first outing this weekend in a game of Sharp Practice.

I've started on some chevaux leger next.

I like the Wurttemberg figures a lot.  They have quite varied and colourful uniforms.  The light infantry are particularly striking.  The cavalry are also nice to paint though the piping on the shabrack is always a pain in the rear.  I have horse and foot artillery and regular line infantry as well so plenty of variety.  Once it's done (ha!) it will be a good sized force for one on one games and will fit nicely as a division in a bigger game.

Very nice, and may I heartily recommend the Piano Miniatures metals and 3d print STL. I have been scaling these up to 40mm (125%, since you ask), and they are superb. (metallics stil to be added on a couple of these..)

Wargaming since the dark ages...

Thanks for the comments.  I have quite a few of the Piano wargames line infantry to paint - they are very nice figures as well.  I wanted marching poses for the line infantry and didn't want basically only 2 poses for the Front Rank figures so went with Piano as they would have more animation.

I umpired a game of Sharp Practice at the club with a scenario I'd devised for the attack on Eggmuhl for the Wurttemberg light brigade in 1809.

Here they are in action:

The lights operating in line for let loose a volley in the village against Austrian Grenzers (off stage left).

Later on the Jaegers use ladders to get into the castle.

It played well, the steel sabots and magnetic bases worked well, and it was nice for the castle to get a rare outing (even if it looks nothing like the actual Schloss).  The game was in the balance with the Allies squeaking out a narrow win capturing the castle just before their morale collapsed.

The Wurttembergers will be appearing in a game of Black Powder next.

Some painted Chevaux Leger, just need to finish the bases and paint the rest of the unit

The coat is citadel ultramarine blue contrast paint.  Figures are Front Rank again with the usual magnetic basing.  I just noticed I've forgotten to do the officers buttons.
