15mm Vikings and enemies, suggestions
« on: August 31, 2024, 04:02:11 PM »
I've gone down some ancient and medieval rabbit holes recently, gathering - with delicious randomness - some Romans, Gauls, HYW, Burgundians, Macedonians. No idea yet where it will end.

I've scoped out a Viking army for a first painting and basing effort, and I'll likely use FoG as the basing guidelines. I bought the Viking starter set from Forged in Battle, which arrived (UK to Canada) in just a week - phenomenal service, great figures. (I also picked up their  'Saxon armoured raiders' to add some 'allies' to the order of battle.) I'll definitely be back for more Saxons and Franks, and why not Crusaders? It never ends.

I'd welcome suggestions regarding Viking-era figures from other manufacturers that would jive with FiB.

All of this, of course, distracts from the usual preoccupations (Napoleonic, ACW, SWW, Cold War microarmour), but what the heck? "Shield wall!!!"

Thanks for any and all thoughts.

Splintered Light miniatures has a good Saxon line.  Some great character models as well.  They should match well.

Thanks, FW. Are PP a fit, size-wise? I have a ton of British and German WWII from PP and these guys seem somewhat more slight and smaller than some other ranges, but I don't have their Saxons or Vikings to compare.

Appreciate the suggestion!!

I don't think Peter Pig will be a good size match - pretty much the smallest sized 15 mm on the market, nice figures but small.  Splintered Light, as mentioned, would be a good option and perhaps check out Baueda and their Vikings (and their tents for a bit of terrain): https://www.baueda.com/hostis.html. Scroll down for individual packs - and they have Norse Irish, too.

Note: I take no responsibility for the amount of money you are about to spend!  lol

I have Splintered Light, Old Glory (Blue Moon), Baueda and the odd Museum miniatures and they all size up well. The only diference is that some are more slight than others but i think they will look nice together after painted.

Donnington’s “New Era” Vikings are nice, and a pretty good match style and size wise to Forged in Battle.

Peter Pig have some fun poses and figures - in a mass of hairy Vikings you’ll be very hard pushed indeed to see any small differences in size or heft.

There’s a whole set of figures from various manufacturers to compare on my website in this gallery too : https://www.madaxeman.com/15mm/thumbnails.php?album=108

Thank you all for those great suggestions, and I'd never heard of Thistle and Rose. I'll reach out via email, as he seems only to have a FaceBook page (and I am not on FB).

MadAxe, thanks for that - super helpful. Love your web site and comparisons.

I love Splintered Light. They mix well with Blue Moon. Also worth a check are 15mm Khurasan, just be aware it can sometimes take a while to get your order. He is a one man shop and his day job sometimes takes him away from the minis. Ever so slightly taller than Splintered Light and Blue Moon, but it doesn't show on the table top.

Thanks, DaveCrow. I'd been looking to Khurasan for something else too.

Quick update: I have ordered and received some Splintered Light, and also have ordered some Thistle and Rose, based on suggestions here.

The S/I figures are quite lovely, though the pose range is fairly limited. They are considerably shorter and thinner than the FiB ones I already have, however, especially the Saxons. I'll probably base them with some thin card atop the base, so they will at least match height-wise, but I will not be using them with FiB on the same bases.

I'll update again when the T&R figures arrive.
