Black cloak tutorial.

Some time ago I made tutorial how I painted black cloak of the Hand from Kingdom Death. I thought I would post it here as well. I hope you enjoy it.

Big dots on the pics are final color mixes, small dots are paints used in specific ratios.

Paints:
VMC 70.951 White
SFG-17 Moonray Flesh
SC-00 Black
VMC 70.966 Turquoise

base color: Black
mix 1: Moonray Flesh + Black (1:3)
mix 2: Moonray Flesh + Black (1:1)
mix 3: White + Moonray Flesh + Black (1:2:1)
scratches painted with mix 3 or white
glaze mix: Turquoise+Black (3:1) heavily diluted with water

Thanks for sharing - that is a very effective method of explaining how you have painted this.

Can you explain a bit more about the final blue glaze?

I made this tutorial as an experiment, to see if I can do somewhat decent one. It has some issues, dots representing color mixes can be hard to understand (different iconography or just text would be better), it seems that the glazeing step is another one.

I did the glaze just to add a little color, it probably had something to do with colors used on other minis that I painted then(IRC).

Generally I use glazes to smoothen transitions between color.

I think the images are really effective - but I think just trying to do the tutorial by images is always going to be hard.

The question about the glaze was more about how you use them, as they aren’t something I’ve learnt to use.

Glaze is just fancy word for using heavily diluted paint.

I normally use paints with consistency a little thicker than milk. For glazes, I add Vallejo Glaze Medium and water (it can be done only with water), so the glaze mix looks like really thin milk.
It is important to absorb not too much glaze mix with the brush. Depending on how dilluted the paint is, color will biuld up on the painted surface after few passes. I sometimes heat up mini with hairdryer, just a little bit, so each pass will dry quicker.

Cool way to try glazing is painting dust on lower parts of cloaks.
