A quick updated army picture.  I'd imagine this army is around 65% complete at this point.

I like those a lot! I took a closer look at the basing, too, it looks quite excellent. The colours in the static grass and the ground really give that dry steppe/ wasteland feel.

Thanks, yeah the basing was intended to match a wasteland...sadly as you can see from the pictures, the Deepcut mats I received are far more saturated than they show on their site (sadly something I find with a lot of mat companies!).

It looked like a solid match from images on the page...but when it arrived it was vastly more orange/reddish tint and doesn't match the basing.  However, maybe I'll get other mats in the future.

Super cool to see a Chaos Dwarf army come together. It's interesting how hobgoblin heavy it is, I hadn't realized that, but it makes sense when I think about it. It's definitely a great-looking army.

I'm only using the original 90's lore (as with all things, I find GW's lore to get worse over time).  The army build is Hobgoblin forward, though most of the remaining units are proper Chaos Dwarfs.

Lore-wise, I'm aiming for 30-40% Chaos Dwarfs with the bulk being Hobgoblins.  I can also run the Hobgoblins as their own army (scouting, raiding ahead of the proper army), hence the handful of characters, etc.  I'm doing the Hobgoblins first because they represent the bulk light/cheap units of the army which are kind of an FSF core you want to have available.  They're more versatile than heavier/more expensive counterparts.

In FSF, units come in four levels of experience, so for theme..most Hobgoblin units are remaining Levy/Regular (the bottom two levels), while Chaos Dwarfs will be at least Regular, if not Veteran or Elite.

There are also light and heavy versions of most units in FSF (infantry, cavalry, chariots, etc.) so the Hobgoblins are all light, while most of the Chaos Dwarfs will be heavy.  Bull centaurs will be heavy cavalry, while the wolf riders are all light cavalry, etc.  In this way the army will cover most unit types, and play thematically.  Indeed I even plan on some battles in the future where the Chaos Dwarfs will be culling/fighting the Hobgoblins (as they're known for being the very most treacherous of all the greenskins).

I like your approach to the army and the lore! One of my first White Dwarf magazines was the one with the Chaos Dwarf army list (I think it had Tyranids on the cover) and I always thought they should have leaned more heavily into the lore for the army list building- like have a bunch more units of hobgoblins or enslaved orcs & goblins than Chaos Dwarf units. If I remember the report on the Battle of Anurell's tomb (sp?) against the High Elves had basically one unit of everything (which makes sense for showcasing the models, but not from the perspective of the Chaos Dwarfs as the masters of these hordes of low-value troops. Then there's the Bretonnian Knight to Peasant ratio... and's he's off on a tangent, folks!)

Yeah the lore is pretty simple: there aren't many Chaos Dwarfs...so they hire hobgoblins to fight for them...and the hobgoblins get protection and aren't slaves like all the other places the Chaos Dwarfs attack/seize, etc.

I have one lore-breaking model (a bull centaur sorcerer) who I'll  paint up, but may not use without some kind of excuse.  In the lore they stat flatly that there are no bull centaur sorcerers but the model was pretty cool. :D

Wow, I haven't posted new minis for this army in a couple of months.  I had taken a break to knock out a bunch of units for the mercenary company, but didn't realize I'd neglected the stumpy boys for so long.  That makes me sad.

Another basic sorcerer:

And...I randomly decided I wanted some Hobgoblin chariots a week or two ago.  I mused over some 3D printed options, but then stumbled upon someone selling the Old World Orc Boar chariot box for $30 less than normal, so I snagged a copy.  I kit-bashed both of them up and modified them a bit.  One is made as a light chariot (with archer), and the other is a heavy chariot.  Only differentiated by the beasts drawing them, some extra beefy wheels/scythes, and some additional shields, etc.  The heavy chariot is driven by some kind of character.

A smattering of pictures from my small campaign against my buddy's Dwarfs (who are currently supported by my mercenary company as he's expanding his painted stuff).
