Starfield battlemats
« on: September 28, 2024, 03:17:53 PM »
Looking for suggestions for a fairly plain starfield battlemat in either 4x4 or 4x6 (4x6 is preferable).

Tiny Wargames is out given their current reputation.

Uk based preferably :)

My favourite opponent has a neoprene deepcut studios mat (deep space I think) - it’s very pretty without being garish, gentle on dropped miniatures and IIRC it was quite reasonable for the quality. They do a range from deep space, nebula, few stars to a black abyss (which I quite like). I’m envious and one is on my wish list for Full thrust.

Go to Dunhelms. They sell a black (table covering) with sparkly 'stars'
Not as nice as ones by Deep Cut et al, but a heck of a lot cheaper & sold by the metre.

Look also at others they do.
Blue (sea)
Green ( grass)
Brown (churned up mud)
Light brown (desert) & a very nice red, which I use as a general table cover, but would make a nice alien planet.

Has.Been how could going to Dunhelms ever be cheaper than buying something online? (I have a wife  lol ). Said with love and knowing she’ll never read this!

I can second the Deep Cuts suggestion

I now have 5 of their neoprene mats, including a 4x6 space one, and they're absolutely excellent.

My first one, a 3x3 for X-Wing has seen action for nearly a decade and is still in great condition. Highly recommended...

If you're looking for DeepCut in the UK, check out Element Games - https://elementgames.co.uk/search?q=deep+cut

I bought a couple of mats from them recently and was very impressed with the service

You can't beat fabric stores (which I assume Dunhelms is a UK example of?) for the price, but neoprene is nicer to play on than most cloths and ought to last a lifetime if you don't leave it in the sunlight 24/7.  It does weigh quite a bit more, which is a factor if you're lugging things to clubs and shows.

I used to run on old Geo-Hex fabric, but when it finally got tatty from decades of use I bit the bullet and upgraded to neoprene and have never regretted it.  Stupidly durable and easy to clean when necessary.

I took an image from the NASA website and got a banner company to print one. They specifically did gaming mat sizes. Was quite a while back, but was about £15-£20 I think.

Thanks for the suggestions  :)

Looks like it’ll be Deepcut.

What about a Buzz Lightyear duvet cover? It’s got all sorts of planets and stars on it?
Not sure if you can get those on Dunhelm or not, maybe the Disney store?!

Have a look on Amazon.
Search under 'space table cloth' or 'star table cloth'.
That kind of thing.
I got one from there and I think it was about a tenner.

Or drop cloth (what-ever that is...). Similarly I couldn't resist a 6 x 4 for the price. A few options.

+1 for the duvet cover suggestion.  I’ve been using a Star Trek one for years. The pillow case that came in the set is great for smaller skirmish games.
