Camp fire
« on: November 29, 2009, 07:10:48 PM »
My first attempt of painting fire. I didnīt dare to paint torches yet, but I think I should now. Would you agree?

I think you should go ahead and do whatever you want, because you'll do it superbly in any case.  :)

The OSL in that piece is just right for me. Not too heavy and really, really characterful (if you can say that about what is essentially a still life).

The pieces were from Reaper, but the arrangement is made on a GW horse base by me.

ah

good to know, thx
I was looking myself for something like that.
Though I am not sure if I rather built one myself with stones, wood, charcoal and without flames.
Flames are very tricky to paint  ;)

I donīt know how you like mine, but I found the trickiest thing were those lights on the stuff around the fire.

You handled it beautifully. I've never attempted painting fire - looks a bit tricky for me.

Michi, your painting makes me happy on a dark and rainy winter day! Always full of life and character.

That looks great. I would like to know how you did it step-by-step so that I can paint my campfires up. Please...

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I didnīt take WIP photos. I try to describe instead:

Paint the flames white.
Add a little warm yellow to the white and paint the flaming tongues leaving white crevices between them.
Paint their upper halves with pure yellow.
Mix a little fluorescent orange to the yellow and paint their tips.
Paint the same mixture around the base of the fire.
Paint pure fluorescent orange aronund the base.
Blend red into the base.
Paint the stones and stuff around the fire yellow where they point towards the fire.
Blend all stuff from yellow to orange and then to the natural colour.
Highlight as usual.

since You somehow asked  ;)

Your technique is perfect
I never tried source lighting, BECAUSE it is very difficult  ;)

If there would be anything not to like, I guess it is a matter of taste.

As always with our miniature painting it is the degree of "over life size" that makes the point about personal style.
This always was a problem I had with painting scale models. Years ago, I had to accept that miniature painting is about defining far beyond what would be recognizable in reality over the distance simulated by the scale of the model.
IMHO, what makes a very good painter is adapting this "definition" to the scale and the distance from which in general a model is looked upon. Apart from mastering the techniques, it is also about having a very well established standard so that the painting scheme makes the models fit together.
Your style is very well established, and I noticed that You are more subtle on figures and quite "over the top" on objects.
My style is not well established, but in general I tend to paint more "lifestyle" and thus not very well defined (which is in terms of miniatures rather poor painting). With objects (and especially bigger ones) I lean even more towards it, mainly to not distract from the figures.
Since I am lazy and do not paint very much, this suits me well.

So relating Your style to real life size, I would be able to see Your objects from very very far, and not blobs of colour and shade  ;).
Which is in fact what good painting is about. Much writing about nothing to complain about. :)

Also very hard to judge from pictures.
Maybe You could shoot one with Your models around the fire?
I hope I will be able to paint only a bit as good as you some time in the future :)
Well, anyway, I like Your campfire, and I hope I could make it clear what I mean.

Thanks MIchi. What brand does a fluorescent orange come in? I didn't even know that they made that type of paint in craft paints. Thanks again for the step-by-step description. I will have to try that myself and see how I can do. Thanks for sharing.

Vallejo Model Color range:
730 yellow
733 orange
735 pink

Though you certainly can use any usual orange as well...
