Battle of Five Armies at The Other Partizan 2024

Against my better judgment, I decided to put on a game entirely based on the Battle of Five Armies based on Tolkien's writing and artwork at the Other Partizan last weekend.  Fortunately, I had a great group of helpers (many of whom also had large miniature collections, including Simon of Iron Mitten, who wowed the crowds with his amazing forces).  After a bit of a design period, I ended up making the terrain from scratch over the course of two months, and fortunately it was all dry by October 13th!

I’ll echo those sentiments, that’s an amazing display of wargaming goodness! I would be very impressed to see a 5 Armies game with that level of terrain and models in 10mm or 15mm (a long term goal for my 15mm fantasy project is something along those lines) but in 28mm it’s off the charts! It’s great to see Simon’s collection in the battle, too- I’ve been a fan of his Tolkien armies for a couple of years and it inspired how I based my 15mm orcs. I’ve been following the development of Midgard, too and seeing that played on a grand scale is also inspiring!

Gibby, right now I am SO ENVIOUS of you and the rest of the folks who were able to attend, as I’m on the wrong side of the Atlantic! Some day I’m going to schedule a vacation to the UK specifically to visit one (or maybe two if I’m clever) of the shows. It’s now firmly on the bucket list.

On a less self-pitying note, I am really grateful for LAF, and Mogsy Makes and the Iron Mitten blogs that allow me to see pics of the shows and vicariously enjoy the spectacle! It’s inspiring to see what can be achieved.

I've seen this game on a few other forums and it's mightily impressive. The scenery/theme using the reproduced Tolkien art is truly inspired. A beautiful looking game in every sense of the word.

Yes, this is the battle that introduced me to the idea of fantasy war. When I read it as a kid it blew my tiny mind, and I think it's still my go to for what I want out of a fantasy battle - elves, dwarves and men fighting the wolf riding goblins is what I always end up coming back to.

The game you have put together is my ideal "mega-battle" set up, and I really love the aesthetic choices you've made.

My enthusiasm for this report lead to me looking into Midgard and ordering myself a copy, something I'm really pleased to have done now that I have read through it. Can't wait to get a game in!
