How well do Black Powder rules work for the Sudan?
« on: 21 October 2024, 10:42:26 AM »
I know that BP are not for everyone and for me they don't work particularly well for Napoleonic battles, with overlong melees - often far too overlong. However, that 'bad point' for Napoleonic battles got me thinking that it might be a 'good point' for battles in the Sudan where, with the limited force sizes, you don't want every melee concluded on a single roll of the dice.

Thoughts please.

Also, if you have a pretty good library for the period (mine's not bad), is it worth buying the BP Blood on the Nile supplement - does it contain absolutely essential extra period rules? I have a couple of BP supplements and, apart from the pretty pictures (for wet Sunday toilet reading), I could have done everything without them (I have a brain of my own).

Thanks,

James

The Blood on the Nile supplement is pretty much 6 scenarios, with lots of pretty pictures and battle reports of each of them.

I picked it up as a PDF in a half-price sale - it’s certainly worth the few quid I paid for it. But I wouldn’t be purchasing the full priced physical book.

As with all BP books its giving you some pre-packaged scenarios, lots of great images, a potted history and not too much in the way of period specific rules.

I had to tweak most of the  stats to give a game that didn’t just dissolve into shaken units. .recognising that BP are designed fir an evening not a day , I found increasing stamina helped . After that it was better . Plus some work on the MG’s so they didn’t jam immediately..

Not sure how much it felt like the tension I expected from the period

When I bought Blood on the Nile (pdf from the official store!), Paypal blocked the paying :) Maybe the "Blood" in the title...
