Questions about Sellswords and Spellslingers
« on: 02 November 2024, 04:15:37 PM »
I just ordered a hardcopy of this and am prepping for a campaign. I can't tell from reading the book, but how many baddies should be expected beyond what is listed in the "foes" and "wanering monsters" section? As in, how often are repeat wandering monster apperances going to happen? If it says 1 troll appears if you get a wandering monster, should I have 2-3 trolls prepared?

Second, the terrain required for these scenarios is very slim, which is part of my reason for choosing this as I recently moved to another country and am without my usual hobby collection and lack space to make much. That being said, is this a "the more terrain the merrier" situation a la Frostgrave or RoSD?

Thanks!

In the default card deck, wandering monster card can appear several times in a game, as it does not get removed, unlike some cards. The rough rule of thumb I use is this: 2-3 wandering monster minis, 15-30 minions, 1-3 larger, loner foes. I have a custom event card deck that tweaks a few things, including this.

As for terrain, you can play with as little as want, although be aware that shooting foes are really deadly in the game. You will get munched by them if you have more of them.

Good info, thank you!

Burgundavia is pretty well spot on regarding numbers for the basic games. In the long run it's so easy to create your own scenarios for these rules, once you get some experience of playing them, you can tailor them to fit your existing mini collection.

It works well with more terrain than is suggested in the rulebook. Be careful though, shooting foes are rare, so too much terrain can penalise the PCs, as thinning down foes with arrows/spells is often essential.

Have a look at my blog, I have lots of Sellswords material there and usually try to show the table layout in my batreps.

All have been said above in regard to monster numbers, just one more thing: get supplement adventures, that will give you a great boost in fun and engagement. I strongly recomend Mistham and Close Quarter Battles.
