Artist foil ?
« on: 18 November 2024, 10:54:11 AM »
A long time ago I use to have a roll of foilish type stuff(possibly called artist foil ?) which was almost lead like in its consistency. It could be simply shaped to whatever design you required but I cannot seem to find it any more. Tried a cheap packet of "artist foil" off fleabay and its way too thin and not the same. I wonder if its been discontinued perhaps because it contained lead ? I have tried heavy duty foil, but its not even close. Anybody got any ideas if it still exists and what it is now called ? I remember using it back in the day to make flags.

Maybe search for stamping foil or craft foil.  Every time I search for artist foil it comes up with gold and silver leaf.

The foil thickness you are looking for is what they use on wine and whisky bottles.  I usually snag it there.  It used to be a lead foil (as were paint tubes that were another source) nowadays it’s aluminum.  You can also look for crafters’ embossing or repousse foils.

Try pewter sheet.  It’s used a lot by scale modellers to recreate tarpaulins and such like…comes in various thicknesses.

Tiranti (now pottery crafts) sell pewter foil and aluminium shim foil - a much thicker version of regular aluminium foil designed for creating retaining walls in clay sculptures prior moulding.
