Jumping in to Rome
« on: 03 December 2024, 02:47:02 PM »
Now that I have some small Greek forces finished for various games, I wanted to try out some Romans that can be used for early republic conflicts like Samnite wars and Pyrrhus. Also took advantage of some black friday deals to grab a bunch of Gangs of Rome stuff too.

Here's the first batch of Romans, really enjoyed the Victrix kits, great detail.

Nice details and looking good.  By the size of the units and force, I am guessing SAGA.

A small nit-to-pick.  During the Samnite wars and even the Pyrrhic invasion, the Roman soldiers had to provide their own gear and uniformity was not common at all.  They pretty much wore what they wanted.  It wasn't until later in the Republic that the state took over equipping soldiers where you start to get the "uniform" look.

That being said..... who cares!  I think they look great together!

Actually first up is Wars of the Republic  :D
Also Infamy, Infamy

Yeah I may go back and do some shield free hands or transfers. Since they're up against Samnites I'm trying to think of ways to visually differentiate (both guys with feathers on their helmets and similar shields).

You are clearly a man of taste and sophistication!

Let me know if you have any questions.

I was thinking about trying to create a whole Samnite War supplement, but I think that is in the far distant future.... if at all.

Test piece for an ancient roadway, pretty happy with it, made based on a Mel the Terrain Tutor idea--textured wallpaper glued to epvc board. I used wood filler on the two sides to create the berm. Now to make like ten more and some intersections!

Nice road!  This is the time of year (Yuletide) to find okay-ish paved roads that people use in their Christmas Villages on clearance.  A good time to find hills too!

Most of my roads are just a rolled up piece of burlap that I roll-out and up and cut to the lengths I need. Easy to store, durable, and transportable.  Not nearly as nice looking as yours though.

You can see it in action a few years ago here:

And here's the complete road project! Along with some wattle fencing suitable for any period (I can hear the furious typing from fence experts saying that Romans built a different kind  lol)
