On a Whim - Warcry Warbands
« on: 21 December 2024, 07:01:41 PM »
Normally I'm a historical wargamer who generally likes battles, but, I also have a soft spot for fantasy and sci-fi skimishes, especially the sort which can be 'out of the box' (oh I love coming up with ideas and settings and customised figures and worlds, etc., but I never get anywhere near actually playing when I do that!)

Also jungle-like settings appeal to me, so the aesthetic of the current iteration of Warcry ticked a lot of boxes, as do what seem to be fairly straightforward rules etc. To which end, as a break after a historical project I've finished a third Warcry warband, to go with the two I'd already painted.

Crossbows and Hunting Dogs - what's not to like! Plus they will do rather nicely in any other medievaly-fantasy setting I think

Spiky armoured types - basically fun to paint  :D

Green and bronze types, with a miniature obelisk - why not?  lol

I even have a little bit of terrain painted up, and having taken the wise decision to buy a lot of pre-made jungle terrain previously for Ghost Archipelago (another jungly-setting I like but have never got on with) I may even manage to actually get a game in the other side of Christmas...

The crossbow-hutning dog team ('Wildercorps Hunters') are my favourite of the three - and the most recent to be be painted, finished earlier today.

Thanks for looking  :D

Nice work.
I like skirmish games, the gap between start (bare metal etc.) & playing on table, is nice & small. :D

Great work.

Are these the official models, they really don’t look like the typical GW aesthetic?

Very nice painting! I hope you're pleased with them, I would be!

All three warbands are official models. The Warcry range keeps the same "weird" (for want of a better word) vibe that a lot of the AoS minis have, but takes it in some different directions.

Thanks, yes I am pretty pleased with how they all came out. I have not painted a lot of GW so gradually getting to grips with the style. The hunters definitely came out the best.

Yes the wider AoS aesthetic is definitely 'weird' - very much picked only the warbands I liked the look of for painting, some of them just way too random or odd for me; but hey that is like everything, people like different types of figures  :D

The other one I like the look of is the Cypher Lords, but seems those are no longer sold with the associated Warcry cards for the game. I don't know where the whole range is going but to be honest it's something I can pull from a box for a quick fantasy fix and I'm not too worried about future updates. Bit like Kill Team, which I may paint a few of inbetween historicals next, too.
