scenarios to be converted for RF
« on: 23 December 2024, 02:05:33 AM »
Hello
just bought a nice recollection of scenarios for the Operation Compass (my favorite desert war period even if the Italians forces performance was the most disastrous)..after having  cross checked  the scenarios also with Italian sources it appears that TOEs, maps ecc had been very well researched and provide the possibility to game less known battles involving also native Saharian, Black Shirts  and   Lybian units among others...

my problem is that the order of battles are designed for a game systhem called Fist Full of Tows 3 which i dont game..they are mainly  at battaillon level so, i suppose,   easily convertible or "bathtubed" ..i also found a free PDF of that FFT3 but it s big, stodgy volume of more than 400 pages  :-[ :?
Rapid Fire or even other  simple systhem like the old "Battle"are the only ones that i game..
Any advice, please, from those familiars with both systhems, on how  to convert/scale FFT units into  RF ones to game those scenarios that i strongly suggest..?

I didn't know that one was released yet, David's (Gasoline Cowboy) scenarios are excellent. I have his Meuse sets and will pick this one up for sure. Probably the easiest option is to drop him a note on the Wargame Vault page, he is very willing to answer queries.

The FFoT3 rules are 1 base = 1 platoon of infantry or 4 to 6 vehicles/guns and the units are generally accurately represented. Rapid Fire on the other hand (officially) uses a set 1-5 1-15 or 1-15 1-45 strength ratio depending on scenario size. I say officially as I think there is a lot of massaging of the units in RF, especially since the switch to "evenly matched" forces in the Battlegroups format.

Unfortunately the Wargame Vault page does not have a content preview available yet so I can't see an actual force list to compare.

I’ve been through this dance a few times - and often you are as well going with the same number of models that the scenario suggests, and rather ignoring what they represent! This has the advantage of being very straight forward.

Or you can go more with what is historically represented and work that back to your preferred rules, and what they would normally use to represent a formation of that size.

But given what rob has said about the FFoT scaling, I’d just go with what it lists and use that for RF.
