"Smaller Scale" Late Medieval Eastern European Figures ?
« on: December 26, 2024, 09:03:12 AM »
Following a holiday to Poland and the Czech Republic a few months ago I came back enthused to game the late medieval period, but the project never got off the ground. Yesterday I received as a present two beautifully illustrated Hungarian books on the army of King Matthias and the Army of Transylvania, which my wife must have bought when I wasn't looking! They have re-kindled my interest. I don't want to game it in my usual 28mm as I don't think I will ever manage to paint it, and hence am looking at a smaller scale such as 10mm.  The Pendraken ranges look OK but aren't terribly extensive, and I note that Kallistra also produce a range but in 12mm.  Three questions. Can anyone recommend any other ranges for me to look at ( I would consider 15mm)? Can the Pendraken and Kallistra ranges be mixed together?  Finally, are the Kallistra figures any good? The photos on the website aren't very good and I've never seen any of their products "in the metal".

Thanks

Have you looked at the TB Line figures carried by Pendraken, these are very nice?

Pendraken historical don’t tend to mix well with Kallistra. All the kallistra figures I’ve had are good quality - but they are very much 12mm.

Fred, thanks for the comment about Pendraken and Kallistra compatability.  Exactly the sort of thing I was looking for.  Yes i did look at the TB LIne of models. There are a few packs I think will just about pass muster for the 15th century but to my less-than-expert eye most appear to be more 12/13th century?

If you are happy with 15mm have a look at Lancashire games. Plenty of 15th century in their Medieval range and a whole load of useful stuff in their Eastern Renaissance range. They also carry the Venexia range which have 15mm Ottoman Turks (I don't know how the two types compare sizewise).

The Essex 15mm Eastern European range is beautiful.

I don't have photos on hand, but really like my Bulgarian and Serbian DBA armies.

Seconded - they are relatively new for Essex, and cracking figures.  I've done both a Medieval Hungarian army (https://www.madaxeman.com/main/15mm_Hungarians.php) and refurbished a bring and buy purchased Medieval Russian one (https://madaxemandotcom.blogspot.com/2024/08/bring-buy-rebase-and-refurb.html), almost all made up of Essex figures in the last few years.

Chaps, thanks for the advice. I haven't bought much 15mm for about 20 years so am out-to-touch with the manufacturers. I had quite forgotten about Essex who used to be one of my go-to- companies back in the '80s and '90s. Indeed two of my 1st 28mm armies  after a break ay University were Essex Muscovites and Poles, and I'm now nostalgic for an Essex stockist I used to visit in Peckham when I lived in the East End of London 1982-84 . Happy days!!
