Imagination: The Aruma War
« on: January 05, 2025, 08:06:11 AM »
A new year, a new project!

This time a game in 20mm on a fictional island archipelago, it's about politics, intrigue, secret services and amphibious landings...

The rules:

Three different rules are used for this campaign. The political development is determined monthly with the board game Junta.
Junta revenue represents operational strengths for the secret service and military.
Intelligence operations are conducted using the RGP Covert Ops. Military operations with Wars of Insurgency rules.

Background
In the introduction to the board game Junta, it says: "The government is financially supported by a global superpower that doesn’t ask questions...". However, this is only partially true, as the superpower has its own agenda. Long ago, a warship belonging to this very superpower, under the command of a young captain named Horatio H., sank a much larger enemy warship, the Natividad, in these same waters. Recent research has revealed that the Natividad was carrying unimaginably vast treasures when it went down.
These findings align remarkably well with entries in the historical journals of Robinson C., who spent some time exploring these isolated islands, and Jim H., a contemporary witness of an expedition searching for these treasures.
As a result, the global superpower decided to send a small military force and a handful of secret agents to search for clues, locate the treasure if possible, and, in the meantime, keep the corrupt Junta government alive.
The parallel idea of improving the living conditions of the locals through an on-site medical aid program was quickly abandoned after the proposed head of the project, Dr. Claire B., repeatedly went missing.

History
The Archipiélago de la Isla de Aruma quickly fractured into two distinct political factions after gaining independence: the Doradistas and the Auroristas. On Isla Dorada, a western-aligned Junta established itself, while on Isla Aurora, a communist party system took hold. Although both states are under the protective guarantees of global superpowers, the respective leaders leave no doubt in their political speeches about their desire to reunify the archipelago.

Political Developments
This politically delicate situation has escalated further in recent days, following international reports that Isla de los Pescadores has declared its independence from Isla Dorada and is initiating talks with Isla Aurora. According to initial rumors, this secession was triggered by the accidental discovery of a message in a bottle washed ashore on the island's beach.

Operation: Sudden Wealth

Recipient: secret service
•   Build a secret base on Isla Dorada.
•   From there, carry out your operations to obtain information about the Isla de los Pescadores and the current location of the message in a bottle.
•   The secret Hexagon satellite system is at your disposal and provides you with high-resolution military maps.
•   Your operations are financed by the monthly income of the Ministry of Interior on Isla Dorada.

Recipient: military mission
•   Your operations are financed by the monthly income of the three generals, admiral and commander of the air force on Isla Dorada.
•   The platoon of the global superpower, however, is always at your disposal.
•   The secret Hexagon satellite system is at your disposal and provides you with high-resolution military maps.
•   Your first mission is to plan and execute an invasion of the Isla de los Pescadores.
•   The aim of the invasion is to completely occupy and permanently secure the island against Aurorista activities and to secure the message in a bottle.

Rules of engagement:

•   Expect the island's residents to long for a reconnection with Isla Dorada.
•   Expect to see tourists in the island's two holiday homes.
•   Do not destroy any facilities on the island.
•   Secure the harbor, the farm, the freshwater treatment plant, as well as the lighthouse and the associated heliport.

Sounds great! I like that you are using my rules for the tabletop battles, of course...  lol

Feel free to ask any questions that may arise.

Very interesting.  I'll be following this.  I too am curious as to the approximate timeframe in which this takes place.

As for carlos, I have just this to say -- Guantanamera... ;)

Thank you very much for all the kind comments. To be honest, I haven’t yet decided exactly when the events are supposed to take place. The figures are from ESCI/Italeri/Revell, so from the 1990s. The vehicles are partly from the 1980s and partly Chinese models not before 2000, so let’s say around 2000.

Played the first round of Junta:

What Happened So Far!
Read more in El Centinela:

“After the successful handover of one million by an unknown superpower, President Monteverde was quite inclined to accept development funds amounting to 10 million and propose the next budget to parliament. In his wisdom, he decided it would be fraternally just to allocate the same amount of 1 million to each of the representatives of the six other powerful families of Aruma, while transferring any surpluses for the benefit of the people to his private account.”

The Seven Powerful Families of Aruma
General Torrealba (23 votes) is the commander of the first army brigade and currently the most powerful man in the state. He enjoys the political support of Christian Democrats, students, university professors, farmers, and conservatives. Even before the first election round, he publicly stated that his special role in the state would necessitate special financial support.

General Zaragoza (15 votes) is the commander of the second army brigade and currently the second most powerful man in the state. He relies on the political backing of trade unions, monarchists, retired generals, and, notably, the votes of the dead. He is also rumored to have strong ties to underworld circles capable of providing assassins.

General Lopez de Vega (9 votes) commands the third army brigade and bases his political ambitions on the support of socialists and radicals. He, too, is said to have underworld connections capable of arranging assassinations.

General Castellano (13 votes), commander of the air force, garners support from bankers. A shrewd political tactician, he knows how to influence political events through rumors of electoral fraud, sudden power outages during vote counts, and alternative budget proposals.

Admiral Villanueva (1 vote), head of the navy, seems to lack significant political support but appears to have good connections to the unknown superpower—evident from the secret financial backing of 2 million. Villanueva is reportedly in talks with other major families of Aruma to provoke a political alliance shift.

Minister of Internal Security Del Rio (1 vote) also lacks significant political backing but enjoys financial support from the mysterious superpower. He is rumored to have a vast espionage network capable of accessing Swiss bank accounts and quick to eliminate political adversaries through secret police assassinations.

President Monteverde (13 votes) is a seasoned politician who relies on the support of the Church and Marxist-Leninists. He is also adept at influencing politically unfavorable votes by ordering recounts of election results.

The Parliamentary Session
Read more in El Centinela:
“After President Monteverde ceremoniously opened the monthly parliamentary session and adequately praised his own achievements in a brief three-hour speech, the announcement of the funds’ distribution led to somewhat tumultuous scenes, particularly from General Torrealba’s faction, which demanded a second election round. This was, however, prevented by a surprising power outage in parliament (General Castellano).

Calls for an alternative budget proposal (General Castellano) also went unheard, as President Monteverde, by candlelight, ordered a recount of votes, which resulted in a surprisingly large majority for his budget plan. This outcome was generally accepted after Minister Del Rio had the parliament occupied by his police for the safety of all attendees.”

What Happened Next…
General Zaragoza hires a psychotic assassin to target General Torrealba, but the assassin waits at the wrong location, and nothing happens.
General Zaragoza then hires a professional assassin, but the financial demands prove too high.
General Lopez de Vega deploys paparazzi to target General Torrealba, but Torrealba strictly avoids being seen with his girlfriend. However, burglars hired by Lopez de Vega manage to steal all of Torrealba’s bribe money. A foreign assassin hired by Lopez de Vega also fails to get close to General Torrealba.
Surprisingly, Admiral Villanueva agitates not against General Torrealba but against President Monteverde, forcing the Marxist-Leninist faction to withdraw their political alliance with the president.
Minister Del Rio has the secret police conduct an assassination attempt on General Torrealba.
Read more in El Centinela:
“Although the secret police summoned after the burglary at General Torrealba’s residence failed to catch the burglars in the act, the regrettable death of the beloved general was reported at his nightclub. His political supporters subsequently declared their political neutrality. The Torrealba family is now called upon to select a worthy successor to the late General Torrealba from among their ranks.”

End of Turn 1

There was a two part series in Practical Wargamer magazine many years ago called IIRC "Bananas" 🍌 about using 1/300 models to fight out a coup based on the Junta board...

Inspired by this, I put on a huge multiplayer game down in Cornwall using what I had by way of 20mm figures and 1/87th armour. Great fun. One army brigade "secured" (looted) the bank, the airforce dropped paras into a barracks only to watch the ammo for the mortars drift outside the walls. The President with the most powerful force cowered in the palace and was very reluctant to get the Presidential Guard vehicles even scratched....

When the dust settled, there was little change....

I was just wondering how many versions of Junta there have been - the one illustrated looks like a much later version than mine, I'll have to dig mine out to take a closer look!
