Wargames Illustrated Fallschirmjager painting guide
« on: 07 January 2025, 03:45:16 PM »
Hi guys,
I wonder if anyone can help with a very specific issue. Some years ago, in 2016 or 2017 I think, Wargames Illustrated published an issue which had a guide in it to painting Splittermuster for fallschirmjager in there. I had a copy of this which I used to paint up some fallschirmjager during that time.

I'm now returning to the project but cannot find this guide for the life of me and I'd like to use the same colours on my other fallschirmjager models so they match. Just wondered if anyone had any idea which issue it was and, if they have a copy, whether they'd be able to send me a picture of the painting guide?

Thanks very much for your help!

Wargames Illustrated 346 had the plastic warlord fallschirmjager so that might be the one.

There is one for sale here - maybe ask them content list to make sure?

Not Wargames Illustrated but there's a step by step guide which may be of use to you:  https://moitereisbuntewelt.blogspot.com/2014/03/step-by-step-splinter-pattern-camouflage.html

The WI with the winter Fallschirmjager doesn't really cover the splinter camouflage.

Best wishes,
Martin

Thanks for this - I also happened to stumble across it yesterday and have a feeling it may be this which was reproduced in WI back then, and therefore what I used before.

Cheers!

This is unnecessarily nit-picky and I apologize in advance.

The Luftwaffe did not use "Buntfarbenmuster 31" for Fallschirmjager smocks as that article states. Instead, they used "Luftwaffen-Splittermuster 41." The colors are the same, but the pattern is different. In brief terms, the Luftwaffe's pattern used smaller, more jagged shapes:

The Wehrmacht/Army pattern is called "Splinter A" by post-war collectors, the Luftwaffe pattern is referred to as "Splinter B." "Splinter B" was also what they used for Luftwaffe Field Division smocks.

I know this will probably not make any difference in minis scale, I'm just being pedantic.

Thanks for sharing. If we can learn something everyday then the day was not a waste. As you say on miniature scale it will be difficult and both will end up looking the same, but still great to know!
