Sand Dwellers - how to make them scary?

I ask those of you who are well-versed in Lovecraft Lore to help me find the texts and passages which introduce Sand Dwellers, and which hopefully make them terrifying.  I've got 19 various miniatures of Sand Dwellers, collected over the last 50 years, but I've never painted them due to being unimpressed.  I'll bet I just haven't read the proper texts.  What should I read, please, to make me terrified of Sand Dwellers, and which may get them prioritized to my painting table???
