I have been thinking about naval VBCW. As per the usual, the question would be how much of the support mechanisms would be in operation. A minor RN vessel would make a mess of any enemy within sight of its guns, but for how long could it operate?
I’m inclined toward riverine warfare as more in keeping with VBCW actions, or perhaps coastal piracy of supply ships.

Yes, we play small flotilla, with cruel seas rules.

I’ll probably do 28mm scratch built, using an amended WtDW. The Bristol Channel is about 19 miles at its head, the Firth of Forth one mile, plenty of room there for an open table. Of course, a tramp steamer would be 12-18” long at the ground scale, so will be more of a terrain piece :-)

Google 'Belgian river gunboats' and it'll bring up photos of a Monitor-style river barge.

Brilliant stuff! I’ve got a small collection of naval things for VBCW (all 1/1250 figurehead coastal range, from the sadly missed magister militum) using things like converted trawlers, kriegfischkutters, harbour patrol boats and the odd Vorposternboot as the big ships. I wasn’t sure what would be available or how they’d go about it so decided to stick to playing small coastal actions. I figured a proper ship turning up would be over powered and could be useful for some scenarios but not regularly used. Off to translate and absorb your posts to help further my interest. Thank you for posting.

Naval battles with small units are very appropriate for the type of war that is the vbcw. Very interesting skirmishes can emerge, involving pirates, smugglers, spies, etc.

Now, a new air combat...AAR with some pictures:
