Can anyone suggest one?

IIRC, Osprey had such a book on the Maximilian Episode. But it now appears to be out of print. If someone could supply the author's name, I could do an internet search for it.

Yes, they published Osprey Men-At-Arms 272 ‘The Mexican Adventure 1861-67’ by René Chartrand.

Martin Windrow wrote an excellent Blandford guide to the uniforms of the French Foreign Legion from 1831 to 1981 which has very good illustrations.

Regarding that Men-at-Arms book, I found this:  https://archive.org/details/osprey-men-at-arms-272-the-mexican-adventure-1861-1867/mode/2up

Thanks. Part of me hates doing this. But it's everywhere on the Net these days and it's hard to say "no!"

That was the easy one. I simply ordered his Osprey on "La Legion 1831 - 1871" from my local library system.

There's also a lot of images floating around on Pinterest re the "cool" French colonial units - Spahis, Chasseurs d'Afrique and La Legion.

It's the Republicanos that have me stymied.

The Virtual Army General published a pair of books titled Viva Juarez! on the Maximilian Expedition / Adventure a few years ago. Here’s the link to the relevant page:

I have those Virtual Armchair General books and they are pretty awesome.  Vol. I "The Armies" is 60 pages of what you're looking for, and Vol. II "The Battles" is 200 pages of scenario info.

The entire library is pretty tasty!

Aside from the Colonial stuff, they have a set of rules called “B’hoys” for Irish gang brawls in mid nineteenth century New York!!!
