Completed my West German customs van and customs officers

The figures are 1/72 Esci from the ground crew (radio operator ) NATO troops man with hand up, and from the Airfix nato ground crew the dog and the three walking (minus their tool boxes)

So accurate! I once tried to get VAT back in Frankfurt … the sausage-filled customs agent was EXACTLY that - huffy! Puffy! And I got nothing. So unfriendly.

Now there's just one thing missing from your representation of the 1970s inter-German border. You need a MAN furniture van fitted out as a cinema projection repair van and an odd couple pair of occupants, one looking perpetually glum in a rumpled linen suit and the other perpetually bemused in bib and brace overalls.* 



* If you haven't seen it Im Lauf der Zeit AKA Kings of the Road is the iconic bit of German cinema of the 1970s and it's even worth a bit of study for your setting as it was all shot along the border roads and towns  of the period.

I recently come across photos of the circus we visited in Cologne circa 87, So I have commenced making bits for that on a small base.
