Found some new toys.
« on: 08 March 2025, 03:20:08 PM »
While browsing Etsy for some hobby items I ended up down a rabbit hole that had nothing to do with miniatures.  I figured that they may work for terrain.

First are two metal punch/stamps.

My initial thoughts were to use them on Foamex to add some interesting details.

As you can see it did not come out so well.  I think they will need to be used on either Fimo or Milliput.
Next is a Shot Plate.  They are used to make small parts for jewelry.

I used some green stuff to make the impression.  If you do similar use some Vaseline to keep it from sticking to the metal.
These came out pretty well.  They are mounted on foamex.

Interesting idea!

Could work also to decorate stone pillars or dolmens.

Ooooh interesting rabbit hole. Very good idea you have here.

did you press the punches into the foamex?

When using them for embossing leather, usually a good sharp hit with nylon hammer is required to get a good permanent impression into it.

I don't do much with terrain and definitely not Foamex, so not occurred to me to mess with them that way.

That works fine for leathers but might not be so valid trying to get a good indentation into something like foamex?

That shot plate looks like it would make nice "shields" especially now I looked and they are 8 and 10mm with a deapth of abou 1.4mm

Now I need to get out of this rabbit hole  ;D

I used a small hammer for the foamex and it did not do a great job.  Last test was on styrene plastic with a hammer and it worked great.  It got a good clear impression.

Wow! Like ordinary styrene plastic that people use to make bases for terrain or figs? What thickness of styrene? I was also thinking it could be used on columns, or even on walls for temples, etc...

It is old stock that I have on hand and pretty thick.  I think about 1mm.

Yeah... it just gets deeper.. lol

One of the other hobbies I picked up is leatherwork, when an occasion occurs that I can.

So I already have a... number of punches available.. 1mm styrene plastic makes sense - normally I would be using them on 2mm or thicker veg tan leather, so would expect a good impression there,  without it messing up the material with the need for a good hit. Nice. Now I have to.. no.. it can wait.

I need to keep an eye out for those shot plates - If I can find a cheaper option...

Its a good thing I like rabbit.
