Midgard : Britannia
« on: March 17, 2025, 01:05:18 PM »
Since buying the rulebook when first released, I have decided to start a Midgard campaign using my Roman and Celtic figures. I have been working on this now for the last few weeks in order to be ready for a campaign in a month or two's time. The Roman forces are pretty much sorted but I still need to do a fair bit to get the Celts up to scratch. I will be updating here on this thread my progress with the campaign, from figures and peripheral items prep to rules updates. The battles will be resolved using the Midgard rules as they are, but I will make up a campaign system to go along with it to make the games more interesting. I will comment on all stages of the process in getting this up and running.

To get the ball rolling, here's an aerial view of all my Roman miniatures...

And similar for the Celts...

Lots more details on my blog - some of which I will repeat here too.

Great idea for using Midgard for that setting! I?ve been thinking of using the rules for games set in classical Greece. I think that with careful consideration, most classical period troop types can be approximated using the rules as-is. And I enjoy how Midgard plays!

Thanks Pattus Magnus. I wanted to invoke that heroic combat feel from the early days of the invasion of Britain.

I have sorted out all of my Roman and Celt miniatures into units now and begun the process of creating stats for each troop type - I will give more details about these in a later post, as well as more info on the campaign setting.

On the hobby front, I have written a brief tutorial on my blog with a "how to" for making the Midgard bases I bought from Warbases into what I will be using on the tabletop in my forthcoming campaign.

This looks very promising and is of particular interest to me as I'm also working on an army for Midgard: Heroic Battles, in my case for the 13th century, though it is intended to serve as the basis for a fantasy army as well.

For the benefit of those of us who aren't familiar with it, could you post a link to your blog, please?

Little Odo - I think people don't necessarily know that blog links are often in signatures.

Lovely looking Romans, by the way (if 'lovely' is the word I'm looking for; 'excellent' might be what I'm after). This isn't a period I'm into gaming (and Jove knows I have enough periods and genres already) but these look absolutely smashing!

Many thanks for the kind praise Red Orc - much appreciated.

And, well noted on the signature stuff - good advice. I will put links in each post going forward as it is a bind to have to scroll to the top of each thread to find what may or may not be in a signature  :)

Thank you for the link, Little Odo. I'm sure I'll get some useful ideas from the detailed description of your MHB project.

This all looks very exciting! Good detail in your campaign system. The official campaign supplement should contain around another 12-15 scenarios when it arrives.

Many thanks for your kind comments there James. Super pumped to hear from the writer of the rules  :)

Looking forward to the new supplement - when will it be out? Hoping it may coincide with the start of my campaign in a month or so's time, so I can incorporate one or two of the scenarios into my gaming sessions.

You?re welcome.  Not going to be out just yet as it?s still being worked on, so don?t wait up! I?ll post news when I?ve got it.

I have finished creating the miniatures and bases for the Roman contingent. Here is the whole 300 point army...

The leaders -

Lucius Valerius Corvus, praefectus castrorum...

Marcus Aurelius Bellator, primus pilus (centurio)...

Gaia Pomponia Thrax, pilus prior (centurio)...

III centuriae of legionaries...

II centuriae of auxiliary archers...

II turmae of cavalry...

More details and pictures on my blog...

Hopefully I should be able to post details of their opponents, the Britons, next time.

Great job, but a question: is your Pilus Prior a gal?

In reality she would not have been, but I wanted to mix things up a little. As this will be a totally fictitious campaign, I thought I could play a little looser with history. I thought the centurion figure, although supposed to be male, looked a little different to all the others I have so deserved a different back story. The Britons will have female warriors, so why can't the Romans I thought (one of the early Pomponias was mother to a Roman general).
