Pulp Airplanes
« on: March 19, 2025, 07:34:09 AM »
Let's share our pulp adventure ready airplanes! I'd like to see what people are using on their table.
I've got these two:

Mitsubishi Ki-15 Karigane prototype "Kamikaze"

This model has been a bit kicked around by two moves, so I leaned into it and gave it the nuln oil treatment to make it look worn. It feels like a good classic 1930s design without looking generic, that can carry more than a pilot.

The real airplane was a prototype military reconnaissance aircraft purchased by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper in 1937 to cover the coronation of King George VI, breaking the Tokyo to London world speed record along the way. (94 hours!)

I wrote an article about it here: https://www.wayfarerdaves.com/building-the-record-breaking-kamikaze/

This pusher was developed at the tail end of World War II and just looks so "futuristic" for its time, I look forward to putting it in a game. Unlike the Ki-15, it sits so high off the ground its useless as cover and characters can fight under it.

The real airplane flew twice before the war ended, and the data gathered showed it had many issues that would need to be corrected before it was battle ready.
Then it defeated Godzilla.

I wrote an article about it here: https://www.wayfarerdaves.com/the-godzilla-fighter-j7w1-shinden/

Oh, the J7W1 Shinden is always sick, not a world away from the Dornier Do 335 Pfeil, another late war prototype invoking a swept wing and a pusher engine.

I joined my gun with pirate swords, and sailed the seas of cyberspace.

I really liked the appearance of the Shinden in Godzilla Minus One. Is was a perfect match, I think. Your model is literally ace!

I have only a limited number for pulp aviation on the gaming table. Two of them are Boieng Peashooters (weathered die cast models):

And there is a Grumman Duck for amphibious action too:

Not really a plane, but pulp at it's best - my paper made (and aluminium foil covered) Haunebu II flying saucer...

Those are all quality, did you do the paint job on the Duck too? I love those! I have a die cast in Argentinian Navy colors that I need to repaint.

I was raised in a Naval Aviation family and spent the first four years of my Navy career in aviation, so aircraft are near and dear to me.

I don't use planes in my games yet, but I'm thinking about it...  :)

I have some plane models, not always suitable; but I don't have patience any more to build very detailed model kits as I loved to do when I was a teenager.

I am also thinking about 1:144 models. In true life when a plane is flying in the sky it looks small to our eyes; so I'll tell my 28mm figures that they can perfectly accept to see 1:144 planes above their heads!  lol

I 'shrunk' a 1/48 Lindberg Jenny (fuselage and wings shortened) so that it doesn't take up too much room on the table...

Aircraft in the Testors(Hawk) line of air racers -though 1/48- are small enough 'stock' that they work well enough (imo) when used with 28mm figs.

Thank you, yes I did. It's a rather good Czech 1/48th scale plastic kit. There are a few more in-game photos:

I cut the decal's letters and assembled my own base/carrier name...  :D

That is even nicer up close! I had my Avionics Technician A school at NAS Pinacolada, I mean "Pensacola."

I have a few fictional versions of city I use in my stories; Muroc is Edwards Air Force Base (Muroc is the dry lake bed the base is on) and Dunmore for Norfolk (Dunmore St. in Norfolk commemorates where Lord Dunmore, last royal governor of Virginia, took his last steps in the city during the Revolution).

I use ?Twopenny Ha?penny? aircraft for my VBCW air games (because they are two and a half-D) glued to mounting board and assembled.

John Gypson has a selection of paper cut-out, military aircraft from the 30?s and 40?s on the ?Junior General? site. He has done a good job of highlighting them, imo, and for one-off games could be the answer to your prayers.

Those 2 1/2 d aircraft have a certain charm. Some of the fuselages strike me as easily done in foam or balsa  that could be shaved and sanded into full 3d, particularly at 1/72 or 144 scale.

I might make attempt to make something in 1/54 with that approach as a bit of landed terrain.

I find the two thicknesses of mounting board enough for me, but yes, it would be no great hardship to fit a spacer. Although producing the curve of a fuselage would be interesting.
And yes, the print could be scaled to suit.

I would probably just file, shave and sand it down and then paint in the details. rather than try to use the 2d print

Where did you get the peashooters from please, and what scale are they?

These are Postage Stamp 1/63rd scale painted diecast models.

Thise are all beautifully finished, s your models usually are, but the flysing saucer is really excellent. I really must try that method somehow...
