scratch build templates for Space 1889 style flyers?
« on: 20 March 2025, 02:55:16 AM »
anyone know if someone ever made a set of templates for cutting bits of wood and/or foam to scratch build some of the flying ships from space 1889? preferably in 28mm or at least 15mm (since they could easily be resized)

got a VSF inspired minis project i plan to work on this summer*, and i'd love to give them some sort of flying ship. i'm afraid i'm very budget limited so can't really buy a kit, but i'd be willing to try and scratch build using foamboard, cardstock, and various salvaged plastic gribblies. but the shapes and angles of most of them aren't ones i'm confident about trying to do freehand, so if i could find some sort of templates to help cut the main hull bits, it would be a real help.

preference for earth style ships like the Aphid (or imitators). but i can probably make martian ones work too, they'll just be a bit trickier to build with their curved shapes.

*involving several sprues of Mantic "halflings" (more like 3/4-lings) and a bunch of head sprues of shakos & bearskin hats from Wargamers atlantic's grognards.

I don?t think 2d templates are going to suffice as plans.

I recommend you make a card stock mock-up in conjunction with a protractor.   When I am doing gables on peaked roofed buildings, this is fairly easy. Trim as necessary.

the link to the 'unfinished papercraft file' would have been perfect, but dead link. a distressingly common problem over the last few years, no matter where i go on the net :(
his approach is basically what i was hoping to do

my biggest concern is trying to get that faceted lower hull shape. the upper hull stuff can easily be done as regular rectangular shapes in a pinch.

Obviously its old and the sites ssl is not liked, but ignoring that and the browser complaining the downloads are not via https (just click Keep).

To the rescue. gives you something to work with?

That and my antivirus has no issue with the files and I still enjoy using onemonk stuff so much, so many times its been a go to for inspiration and gaming. Legend.

that Aerial steam launch might be suitable as a basis for a hull. or the 15mm 'cicada'. thanks!

It does look interesting - far too interesting for my own good :-)

If the superstructure looks like most ACW confederate ironclads or riverines, it?s basically a truncated pup tent  with wedges in the front or back. Aside from where the corners are converted to flat planes every thing could be 60 degrees of angle.  If you like I can draft you a blueprint  and post it here.

Pretty certain an exploded view, each section was viewed 'flat on,' so probably not.

As an aside, from the Closet of Shame, an idea for a 'nef deck from a few pieces of Pegasus, later Urban War, terrain sections which never made it past 'clip a few together' stage. Mage Knight piece for scale...

Never even decided which triangle pieces for the aft...

Exploded templates here.  bottom hull not included, but as I envision it as a slab sided barge or sled, you shouldn't have any problems.  a 45 degree slope on the front and back and it is easily drawn, or you could just mirror the superstructure underneath the deck.  I just didn't have room on the single sheet to create it. The deck itself could be lengthened by a few inches to better match my first drawing but it isn't necessary unless you want some room for deck crew and gun emplacements.

Have fun.

definitely more useful. slab sided barge isn't a style i gave much though to, but it makes some sense i suppose. might actually work better with the river gunboat style superstructure i'd been considering.
and i'm still trying to decide how much deck space i'll want. your diagram would be easier to scale up or down, for sure.

hmm.. might even be adaptable to a Sampan or Junk style hull should i ever start building a martian army to oppose these guys.

When i finish my dirigible?i?ll do one of these.  I like your sampan idea.  that will be next.

I am trying to do a lacepunk aerocraft but i really don?t want to do sails ( which in absence of resisting water and keels cannot move in any direction except with the wind?plausibly that is). anyone have any ideas on what might look plausible for a Napoleonic flyer?

While I have seen a painting of a balloon with sails near Nappy in period, you are preaching to the choir about them doing much without keels. I decided to go with very laminar winds on Mars and claim kites flew with sails 'flown' above and below getting a combined vector.

On Earth, lines would be hundreds of feet long...
