Legions Imperialis Rule Discussion
« on: 20 March 2025, 03:32:15 PM »
Hello all!

It?s been a long time since I?ve been on this space, but I hope to make the transition away from FB and back to LBF.

Is there an ongoing discussion here about Legion Imperialis rule modifications?

We?ve played Legions Imp a lot - and enjoy the flow of the game. We have very much treated it as the latest iteration of the Epic series of rules.

Some comments on the rules

1) The points are all over the place. Infantry are super cheap, aircraft are all basically 100pts irrespective of their weapons load out, titans seem poor value, drop pods are super cheap, etc etc.

2) Dedicated Transport rule is total nonsense - it just allows exploits of walls of Rhinos to block LoS, Rhino drive by attacks, Rhino charges. All of which by models that have no effect on break point.

3) Imperial Fists Blaster Drill - why does this apply to Missile Launchers, makes it the best faction rule in the game. (I owned Imp Fists long before LI was a thing)

4) Weapon stats, these are just too fiddly for the scale of the game, ranges are all over the place, consolidation to 6? bands would help. There are just too many weapons on some vehicles which make in painful to work through shooting. Too many weapon special rules, many of which are similar or trivial in effect.

The good is that the turn sequence avoids alpha strikes, and you can get loads of toys on the table

And we have been playing with army lists to get Tyranids and Squats on the table too

We like it too, but as you suggest we think it needs a bit of tightening up. I was involved in the whole Net Epic rewrite of the rules back in the day and am wondering if it is time to get the band (and others :)) back together again.. Lol

To your list I would add:

1) Some troops feel like they are over powered compared to others.. I am looking at you Veletaris/Ogryns vs Terminators/Assault Marines..

2) Some weapons need tweaks. Warp Missile vs Plasma Blast Gun

3) Some weapons seem to leave a clear choice over others - Leman Russ Vanquisher vs normal cannon

That sort of thing?. That is what I am trying to create a community here to talk those rules out?

Nid rules sound cool too and perhaps this is where to do this too?

Assault marines are just pointless - their melee bonus is trivial

Yes, some weapon choices just make no sense, some are just better for the same points. Then you have Sicarans that have at least 3 entries in the lists for different turrets with different points costs - why these couldn?t just be options for one base listing.

Beautiful table and game going on there! Good comments on the rules. I have to get back to my LI painting. Too much commission work!!!

Perfect! So lets get to work

I think we fixed the WH Plasma Blast Gun. This weapon currently makes no sense and would never be taken in light of the other weapon profiles.

All we did was add the Blast 3 inch rule.

That said, we would like to get the groups thoughts?

I assume that WH is warhound in this context - I?d not spotted that as a poor option - to be honest we have generally found most of the titans a bit of a points sink and they don?t get fielded that often.

I?m not sure where you want to go with this, are you after a set of house rules, which can then become wider community rules? Do you think the LI player base is interested, or they are too dependant on the GW official rules?

Great question? Really, I think I want to make a list of community built alternate rules for things we might think need adjustment. I?m not looking to re-write anything. Just to give alternatives. This community did the same for Frostgrave back in the day and allowed gamers to alter their house rules with the results.  Basically, I think people brought what they thought were good changes to their table and disregarded the rest?

Thoughts?

Feels a fair starting place. Not sure how many Legions players are here on LAF though
