Gripping Beast - Ragnarok Miniatures - Trolls
« on: 20 March 2025, 07:15:16 PM »
I just noticed that they released some new figures for their Saga Age of Magic range: Trolls! Many lovely figures there, in various variants:

I think this note counts for them all:
"These figures are intended as 28mm scale, however as they're meant to be massive in comparison to regular height characters they stand at approx 45mm high."

Armoured trolls:

Some trolls with elf ears?

Some unarmoured "orcish" looking trolls:

Awesome! I like those a lot, but didn?t have the hobby money to dive in when Ragnarok ran the kickstarter with these. My understanding about the pointy-eared trolls is that they?re meant to line up with descriptions from traditional Scandinavian folk tales, rather than more recent fantasy tropes. Which is great to have available for gaming inspired by Norse sagas.

Ah, I totally missed that there is a kickstarter running for them.

Thought a bit so that it's a reference to the Scandinavian folk tales with the pointy ears but I am not versed well enough there. Surely a great thing to have available, yes.

I also had a dejavu with the top first troll and needed to look it up first. However, I have now a slight feeling on who stood model for it  :D

Ooh. Some of those look really useful and, at 45mm, a more "believable" size to have as an adversary than some of the really enormous trolls out there. The pointy-eared ones also remind me a lot of AD&D bugbears.

Need to fight some of these with the tiny Hornblower girls ;-)

That's probably a good match-up sizewise to the supposed actual size of the Scandinavian trolls - they are truly massive. If you remember the old Zvezda 'Ring of Rule' Troll it was about the same size as the big GW plastic LotR Troll, both in the same 28mm scale, so that seems to be about the right area. If they were cheaper, I'd have a few of the big-eared types but I can't really afford them, despite liking the look of them a lot.

I?d love to see a comparison shot with a figure or two added for scale. They look great!
