Cost of Having 28mm Heads Sculpted
« on: March 27, 2025, 06:54:16 PM »
I was wondering how much it might cost to have a professional sculptor sculpt and make a four head set for 28mm miniatures? I know a full figure cost a round 200-300 at least, but i wasn't sure how much for several heads. It'd for a possible pig-orc army, and I'll need a bunch of heads once the sculpts are complete. Like, 200-300.

Get a consensus on price then run it as an open competition and pay the winner? I?d certainly enter! Just need someone to cast them for you then. What models do the heads need to fit?

I was thinking the new Oathmark plastics! Lots of customization , and the human infantry are actually kinda close to the old DnD illustrations of pig faced orcs. In body, anyway.

I do like the idea of an open bid kind of deal; think we could get it to gain traction?

That's a good question, you're right about full bodies but I've never thought about just the heads. I'd advise you to just talk to a few sculptors, lay out what you want and get price quotes. I've found the more information you can provide, and reference material to work off, the quicker and cheaper it can be because the project will take less time.

All excellent points! Any other sculptors/companies I could contact? I?ve already contacted Eureka USA and Steve Barber Models and am waiting on a response. I also someone to get poll going for Wargames Atlantic, so we?ll see where that one goes.

I commissioned a set of 7 heads from Talos minatures (Captain Harleck on the form) for 250 euros.
I don't know if he is down for doing fantasy beast heads but he does have a post showing his work in the medieval section under, "alternative models for Perry WOTRs"
Steelfist minatures got the molds and now sale the heads in their Italian wars range.

I thought Steve Barber was moving house (internationally) this year?

Possibly try Curtis Stone at https://shop.ramshacklegames.co.uk/content/4-about-us - he can also cast for you.

Yes, Steve Barber moved to France and is restarting his business there.

He bough a rather large house/ manor there, saw a picture recently on Facebook. Looked like a great idea.

I would be interested in this as well. I need a simple 28mm head with a Norman style helmet on it and some wings on the helmet.

I saw on Facebook last week that Steve Barber has now reopened for business. I'll be checking his site out sometime after Salute.👍

Have any of you considered DIY with Sculpy?  For a pig head orc, or some winged helmet adornment sculpting one shouldn?t be too much of an effort and a sculpy press mold is a lot easier to manage  than the setup of a spin cast mold of pewter.

I presume you mean cast it myself? Ive considered that, but I'm not sure how good of a sculptor i am, haha. I'm a passable painter, but i doubt Im much of a Michelangelo or Cellini.

Pig faced orcs as per the old mini figs of my youth should not be too trying even for a non-Cellini.  I would give it a shot, ya have little to lose even if you fail but you may well surprise yourself.  Never turn down a task that lets you buy new tools.
