The Lisbon Navy Museum
« on: April 05, 2025, 08:48:33 AM »
Just recently I had an opportunity to visit the Museu de Marinha (Lisbon Navy Museum) in Belem, Lisbon, that houses an interesting collection of models and items relating to the Portuguese contribution to maritime navigation, the discoveries of the 'New World' and development of the Portuguese Navy.

Nice report, fabulous museum.

If you ever get the chance you should try and visit its counterpart in Rio de Janeiro, the Museo Naval. It covers part of the same territory but with the focus on Brazil naturally enough.

There's also a small but fascinating little museum inside the Farol da Barra (Forte Santo Antônio) in Salvador, the Museo Náutico. If you ever do go, do take the walk up the hill to the British Cemetary, there are a number of RN interrals there.

A few years ago we rented an apartment for a couple of months in Larenjeiras in Rio. One of the streets that runs through the adjoining neighbourhood of Largo do Machado is Rua Gago de Countinho, named after the Portuguese aviator whose aircraft sits in the Lisbon museum.

Thanks for sharing, I love seeing military museums around the world! My interests skew later than yours, so I liked seeing the aircraft at the end.

Hi chaps,
Thanks for your comments, and glad you enjoyed the post.

Carlos - Thank you for the 'Heads-up' on the Museo Naval, Rio as South America is a part of the world Carolyn and I have been discussing as a place neither of us have visited and so your reference has been noted.

Cheers
JJ

My pleasure. If you ever do go, drop me a line. I'd be happy to share some tips on things to see of a military/historical bent.

By the by the Museum in Callao in Peru is well worth a look in. If you are ever in Lima, its only a shortish taxi ride.
