The Warriors at Havoc 2025
« on: April 07, 2025, 11:01:29 PM »
Ran another fun game of The Warriors (1979) with Mean Streets rules at Havoc this past weekend.  Had a great bunch of players who all had a grand time, and the game won 'The Dave Award' for best in show!

AAR Part I: Initial Deployment and Moves:

Orphans come up out of the Rockaway Avenue subway station and see the Mongols armying towards them on Rockaway Avenue.  Both gangs eye each other, but decide to part ways and head upboard where more of the action will be brewing; heading up Fulton Street and Herkimer Street respectively..

The Boppers saunter in from the top end of Eastern Parkway and spot the Furies emerging from the Granada theater on Fulton Street.

The Lizzies enter at the corner of Broadway and Fulton and decide to head down Fulton towards more action, rather than making straight down Broadway towrds where the Warriors just came down the stairs from Broadway Junction Station.  Over on the far right, the lead Riffs can be seen advancing up Somers Street behind the Granada.

At the lower end of Eastern Parkway, the High Hats move in, spotting a menacing looking Fury warming up in the middle of the intersection with Fulton, and not yet spotting the Riffs coming their way on Somers.

The Warriors decided not to head into the cauldron brewing in the center, and decided to head down Broadway to the corner of Eastern Parkway, and will be coming up behind the High Hats.

At the end of the second game turn, the Warriors have jumped the High Hats from behind, all the other gangs will soon be in the action (the Riffs are just out of sight at the top end of Somers near the corner of Eastern).

All the gangs have been marking tags on buildings as they march in, except for the High Hats who got quickly jumped.

And all the players are ready to bop!

AAR Part II:

The Boppers decide not to advance up between the Furies and Lizzies, and instead turn down Herkimer and start laying waste to the Mongols.  Runje is the first KO of the game under a flurry of purple lamé pounding.

The Riffs turn up Eastern Parkway to make a High Hat sandwich.  Meanwhile, the Furies line up to await the outcome of the Boppers and Mongols fray, and the Lizzies line up with an eye on the Furies since the Riffs seem pretty well engaged and will also have the Warriors pretty well bottlenecked.

The High Hats get ground down by both Warriors and Riffs, but they and the Riffs waste some of the Warriors heaviest hitters.  But even with Swan and Ajax KOd, in a surprise burst of speed Snow, Cochise, Vermin, and Fox break through and start sprinting for the next subway station.

As the Boppers lay waste to the last of the Mongols, Riffs and High Hats give chase to the Warriors.  No where to run to baby, nowhere to hide.

Cool all out brawl! I like your city set up too, how big is the board?

The board is 4'x6'.   25mm figures, 1/64 scale diecasts and STL printing.

AAR Part III:

While the Furies are cautiously awating the outcome of the Boppers and Mongols battle, the Lizzies pounce on them.  Meanwhile, the Orphans have been slowly advancing up Fulton, trying to stay huddled close together rather than getting strung out.

In another surprising burst of speed, Cochise and Vermin break away from the Riffs' pursuit and dash behind the surprised Orphans and make it into the Rockaway Avenue Station.  Where are the others?  We'll meet them at Union Station!

Well, Snow went down fighting holding the rearguard, and Fox made it up to the roof of the other entrance before being cornered there by Orphans and Riffs.

Back in the center of it all, Furies and Lizzies wail on each other with flashing blades and swinging bats.

Fox holds off the Orphans who have come around to try to hit him.  But they left the entrance open — he has a chance to leap over the high end onto the sidewalk and down the stairs to get away.  But alas gets KOd by a Riff, bringing the game to an end.

Final Standings:
Boppers, 9VP — 3 tags put up, 6 KOs (all the Mongols).
Lizzies, 8VP — 5 tags, 3 KOs.
Warriors, 7VP — 1 tag, 4 KOs, 2 escaped.
Furies, 6VP — 3 tags, 3 KOs.
Mongols, 6VP — 5 tags, 1 KOs.
Riffs, 5 VP — 3 tags, 2 KOs.
High Hats, 2VP — 0 tags, 2 KOs.
Orphans, 2VP  — 2 tags, 0 KOs.

Fox came very close to giving the Warriors a tie for 2nd.

Mongols got too focused on tagging and were strung out when the Boppers landed on the top of their column.

Lizzies were able to put up more tags as they maneuvered into position and got the jump on the Furies who were a little too cautious about committing to action early.

Riffs were in good position to finish off the Warriors early, but initiative rolls and action rolls allowed them a surprise escape.

High Hats just got sandwiched early, and silently they screamed.

Orphans were too focused on staying huddled, and this was the first game where an Orphan player didn't take advantage of the ability to choose a lot of Wimps and come rolling in with lots of figures to spread out and paint the town green.

That was quite the melee, did you have players for each faction or just run them all towards each other and let the dice decide?

Yes, there were 8 players, one for each gang.  You can see them at the bottom of the first post.

Generally, multiple players were moving simultaneously.  Only when gangs were in close proximity and wanted to wait to see what the others were doing did we run that bit sequentially by initiative dice roll order.

The Mean Streets rules are superb for fast-play multi-player games.  These were all first-time players, and the game snapped along.

Sounds like quite the melee -- 8 players!  :o The biggest Mean Streets rumble that I've run is 6 players. I love all your modified figures to match the gangs from the movie. Your city streets look great! A well-deserved "Best of Show" award, Cat!

Love it!  :-*

Thanks, folks!

The game runs super easy with 8 players!  With the way my street layout breaks up the board, there's usually 3–5 players moving simultaneously.

"Look what we have here.  The Boppers are wasting the Mongols.  The Wariors and the Riffs are wasting the High Hats.  The Lizzies and the Furies are wasting each other.  And even the Orphans are helping to corner the Warrriors so the Riffs can waste one more.  This is the way things ought to be!"
