Superb.  Nothing like a big block of halberdiers to get ya going.

They look grand and I love the idea for the slogan and flag.

@Elbows: Indeed! Well, mainly the impetus to do them was that I got them. Despite of some fanciness here and there I still managed not to spend a lot of money on this army so far, kinda sticking to the idea of "painting what I got". Splitting the unit up was no option, because I knew I'd never paint the rest, and I kinda pride myself in being able to paint large batches of figures at once. :D And there's just nothing better than a large unit of infantry, with pole arms, right? Probably the largest unit in this army.

@Frugalmax: Cheers! :) Yeah, I agonized for what felt like ages to decide which colour scheme to go with, but in the end I just went with Ostland again, simply because it's such a backbone unit and due to its size would look weird if this mostly-Ostland army had a blob of an entirely differently-coloured dudes in there.

@Lost Egg: Cheers! Yeah, using that flag design isn't the most inventive idea, but I made it look a bit fancy, and it looks nice. The idea with the slogan hit me as I was cobbling the flag together on the computer (well, just mirroring it really).

So now that this is done, I guess the next point on the to-do list would be to go back to the halfling rooster riders and finish those. Maybe I can get some work done on them this weekend.

@white knight: There may have been a mishap with what's to come after the colon; at least I don't see anything there.

Right, the halflings are table-ready. Last update on them has been three weeks ago, so about bloody time, I say! :D

Loads more stuff COULD be done, but oh well. At some point they gotta be done, right. Hope you like them!

I hear "Ride of the Valkyries" when I look at these guys. Great work!

Edit: I just saw that Rick posted the same comment on a different thread that is actually valkyrie themed. I must have read that the other day and kept it in my subconscious... or the idea of little people riding giant chickens just necessitates a dramatic soundtrack.

@LouieN: Thanks very much! Very happy with how these units turned out. :)

@Lord of Moria: Thank you!

@Frugalmax: :D Cheers! Ride of the Valkyries fits so many impressive sights, including chicken cavalry!

Well, let's brace for the big maintenance, right? I shall see you on the other side, gentlefolk. Up the LAF!

You more than did them justice. Gives me a renewed desire to get some out and finally paint them.

Useless little fact about them, three sculptors were involved.
- Brad Shier sculpted the original rooster prototype, as well as a multipart rider to go on it (I think unreleased)
- John Pickford, who did my Empire style dwarf range, converted and resculpted three more rooster poses
- Juan Montano sculpted the riders, as well as the rest of that halfling range.

Sigur: Love the Halflings. I really need to add a couple more units of the cavalry to my collection. I did enjoy researching different rooster colour schemes.

White Knight: Thanks for the link. I had another look through all the Elf greens again. I hope that you find a home for them one day. I do have a few ideas for using them if they ever come out.

@white knight: Cheers! They're really cool sculpts, and thanks for the additional info! Do you still remember which one the original prototype rooster sculpt was? Seconding Matakakea's thanks for the link. Looking through all these greens is lovely. Proper miniatures. :) I must have missed that the imperial elves also happen to be sea elves! Really like the fifer. There's way too few fifer miniatures around anyway. Drummers to no end, but not enough fifers. Anyway, that's really good sculpting on display there.

@Matakekea: Thanks very much! Yeah, for many weeks I had loads of tabs of different sorts of rooster reference material open. My plan was to make the ones with the lancers on top look extra impressive and the mounted archers' roosters look a bit more mundane. A concept that got thrown over board a bit as I very much had time breathing down my neck on painting those figures. :D

As for news on the Warhammery front - I got the 1500pts (with wizards!) game almost set up now, but lacked the motivation to start playing it. One of my favourite aspects of Warhammer renaissance, the quasi-secret setup via sketching is out the window with solo play of course, so all I did was some dice rolling on which flank of the battle line certain key elements would deploy. Hope to get going on that game soon though.

Yes, this one (painted by the sculptor Brad Shier)

I *think* I based the idea of imperial elves being sea elves on a single page from one of the old Warhammer RPG books, but I may also have made it up because I thought it fit. By the time I was doing the elves and halflings, I was more comfortable making up my own lore and fluff (like the roosters, and the piggyback riding halflings).

I tried to reflect the more ancient and therefore more culturally advanced nature of the elves by making their dress style slightly more Elisabethan. The fifer is another thing that just seemed to work well with the idea of elves.

You could also deploy one faction and wait some days between before deploying the other one. Perhaps you forgot about some aspects of the first deployment meanwhile.
