Maladum (21/4 five heroes and all enemies painted)
« on: 21 April 2025, 02:14:01 PM »
Last Christmas I treated myself to the KS edition of Battle Systems Maladum. Due to other projects and health issues, it's been sitting on my shelf looking pretty  :-[.

A colleague of mine expressed interest in the game, and because I don't play my own games grey, I HAD to paint up some before our first game.

We chose 5 heroes, we'll see which ones we actually play.

Heroes: I have to admit, Brahm (red haired guy with flintlock pistol and sword) was the mini that decided I wanted this game  lol.

Lamentors: the "endless hordes" of Darkness.

Myrias: more dangerous and capable troops.

Hellsponts: twisted reanimated beings capable of breathing fire!

ROT TROLL: I wasn't sure how my simple quick painting would turn out, but it worked surprisingly well.

EDIT: forgot the pictures in the original post  :o.

Last but not least, the Malador, the Big Baddie! Currently awaiting varnishing tomorrow.

Nice work! What do you think of the game?

Thank you!

I haven't played the game yet, but have played Core Space in the past so a little familiar with the general rules concept.

Saying that, it seems like there's a LOT of options,  not necessarily in a bad overwhelming way, to give you the gaming experience you want! Do you want a nice and easy Saturday adventure or a hard core death defying tactical odyssey?

I like that you have options and the terrain and minis look awesome!

I think, for our go at it, less is more, so keep some optional rules away and come to grips with the basics first, rather than having to constantly flicking through the rulebook.

Nevertheless, I'm very excited to give it a go  ;).

Nice work! What do you think of the game?

We tried a game a couple of days ago. Here are my thoughts in short:

Lovely looking game, very immersive.  But... it's another of those games that takes an hour to set up (even though I had most things organised) and several hours to play, trying to remember all of our special abilities etc. Too much time and I definitely won't be able to play any kind of campaign with limited spare time. Unfortunately, a game not for me.

Ah, too bad. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Hopefully you get some fun use out of the game components even if the game itself isn't for you. It's hard to find that game that hits the balance of all of the factors (and of course its not the same game for every person or every situation)! We might still be looking, but we've found a lot of good ones along the journey!

I recently purchased the standard Maladum game but so far all I've done is opened the box to look at all the pretties!

I have watched a number of Youtube videos and it looks entertaining enough, just wondering why I see very little being talked about it on the LAF?  This was the only topic I found when I did a search that was posted this year.

It may be too fiddly for me as well, I also prefer games that don't require a lot of prep work/setup but I'm willing to give this a chance.  I keep reading it lends itself well to solo play, so it can't be but so fiddly I would think.  I worked in a solo WW2 game this weekend, setting up the "battlefield" took me almost an hour of dragging components out and arranging them to look reasonable, is this game any different?

I played First Born solo, leaving the game on the table. Worked very well.

I have the Dungeons KS set for another game system. Great variety of pieces and you can do more than with plastic.

Facebook has both a Maladum and Battle Systems fan Facebook group, so I figure most activity is there. Also found a reddit group.

I think ced1106 is having a reasonable assessment here. If you can leave the game set up between sessions you probably have half the work done there and only need to rearrange.

LOL, I haven't taken it out of the box to play yet and just ordered the Beasts of Enveron expansion set!!!

Yeah, leaving it up would be a good thing.  I need a revolving table so I can leave up my ongoing WW1 and WW2 battles too...and still have room to run slotcars!

Forgot to mention how nice your figures look painted, fine job!!!

Thank you very much for your kind words sir! It's amazing what I can achieve with 30 minutes and Armypainter Speedpaint 2.0.

While I have painted quite a few figures and vehicles (Wild West, WW1, WW2) I have no experience in painting fantasy figures.  What would be the 10 top colors I would need to do the Maladum figures?

It took me 1.5 hours to set up the tutorial game the other night, that included punching out the pieces and putting them together.

Last night I was looking at their Maladum Demonstration Quest "A Flame Against The Darkness" and it says to:

Remove the Fading Light card from the deck, it’s not
used in this Quest. Then take four Revenant cards,
two Dungeon cards, four Novice cards, one Veteran
card, and four Environment cards, shuffle them,
then put them on the bottom of the pile.

But I could not find anywhere how to identify those card types.  I did notice a small icon in the bottom lefthand corner of the Event Cards but nothing to indicate what the icons represent.
