'Simplicity in Practice'.
« on: May 31, 2025, 07:31:39 AM »
Found this one page ruleset lurking in a shadowed corner of the Emporium. I'm a big fan of Neil Thomas, and usually use OHW straight from the tin. Thought I'd give these rools a go...  be nice to push some toys about without getting a migraine!
Scenario 2 from OHW is chosen, it's a basic 'just get stuck in lads!' with these forces diced for.

Prussians

4 Infantry Battalions
1 Light Infantry Battalion
1 Squadron of Hussars

French

4 Old Guard Infantry Battalions
1. Old Guard Foot Battery
1. Squadron Old Guard Grenadiers

The field is set. Battle will commence 12:00 hours, sharpe!

The Prussians took the fight to the French, from the get go. Their Infantry closed quickly and formed a volley line, the French followed suit, as the Cavalry scowled at each other from the flank. Volleys and first rate skirmish fire flailed the French, their line began to falter! Seizing their chance a Prussian Battalion charged the French line. At last the Old Guard manned up, routing the enemy with the bayonet and killing their General!

This proved to be the high watermark for The Guard. The Prussian cavalry pitched into their counterparts, routing them from the field. As both sides exchange volleys, the smoke thickened. Unseen, the Prussian Hussars hit the Guard Grenadiers in the flank, they broke. Cries of 'La Garde Recule' swept down the line, and the battle was over!
If Boneypart's Old Guard can't stop the black hordes of Prussia, who can?

Bad day for the Frenchies there.  As he said in the movie, he should have burnt Berlin.

I'm a fan of the Neil Thomas rules. His books are incredibly interesting to read and understand his opinions on game mechanics. Often his rules have very subtle nuance not evident at first glance.

Also, I really like your old school figures with the large unit-style basing. Very nice!

Thank you for that. We've played OHW with 18 units on each side. Rules coped admirably, as you mention, everything happened that does using 'proper rools'!
