Just got my copy of the game.

Therefore, review inbound once I can fit it into the schedule for the blog.

It's going to be interesting to see what conclusions you come to and whether we have a broadly similar opinion of the rules.

Has anyone played any games yet?
If so would it work ok on a 3x3?

I don't see why not, the author recommends a 4'x3' table and I'm going to use my 4'x4' table so I'd have thought a 3'x3' would be a good size. You might feel it's a bit cramped at the top end of the points and with a lot of asteroids or other space junk - just see how it goes for your games.

Thoroughly recommend Brigade's spaceships -- they're brilliant models. They design them in 3D and print masters for casting. The multiparts fit amazingly well; the bits slide together with a spot of superglue and no filling/pinning needed and they've got the hang of hiding the joins in natural places so they just vanish. The mix of light resin bodies and metal details means the ships aren't "top-heavy" and prone to falling over. They paint really well; I white undercoat them, contrast/speedpaint them and then brush details and they're done in no time. Their 15mm vehicles are similarly well made!!

Would fleet-scale models be okay with the game? I have Star Wars Armada, and most of the fighter sets, so the thought of using them on a smaller table is appealing.

I guess I'd need to sort out individual bases for the fighters, rather than the stands of 3, but, other than it being rather fiddly, is there anything in the rules that would prevent me?

It feels like trying to use 6mm figures with a 28mm ruleset, so I would hope it would be okay...

The rules are completely mini and scale agnostic, zemjw, so as long as your opponent is using the same base sizes there really shouldn't be a problem - I did much the same thing with some Armada scale fighters as well (I think I mentioned it earlier in this thread). It's a good way to build up a couple of fighter flights and some of the sets have gunboat/corvette type models as part of the set.

Thanks, that's good to know. I did re-skim the thread before asking, but must have missed it :(

Now I just need to find the models, which aren't where I'm pretty sure I left them ???

I do that all the time - I'm currently looking for some 28mm mini's that I've put somewhere, in a box maybe?

Yes, basing the fighters individually is very frustrating, time consuming and fiddly - I cut off the peg underneath, drilled into the model and inserted a flying stand but you should find a better way of doing it, perhaps.

The key to what table size really comes down to movement rather than base sizes - Voidfighter uses a S, M and L sticks for movement and firing ranges, 2.5", 5" and 10" (I think - not got the book in front of me. You could drop down to cm rather than inches but that might get fiddly as well when you're trying to sort out firing arcs.

Good luck, though and please post up what you do - I might decide to do the same with mine!  lol

I thought I was luring a couple of friends (gamers but not wargamers) into a game of Voidfighter. They liked the miniatures I've got. They liked the general idea of fighters in space.

Then we got to movement. "Why are we using these weird sticks? Can't we just use a ruler or tape measure?" Well, yes, but the sticks are supposed to make it easier. "How do I know where to move to if there are no areas marked on the map? Is it even a map? It's just a black cloth."

We played Terraforming Mars instead.

However. I have a black vinyl playmat marked with 25mm hexes. S = 1 hex, M = 2 hexes and L = 4 hexes. I reckon a second go at introducing them to Voidfighter might be on the cards. I may have to fudge the rules a little.
There are 100 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary and those who can work from incomplete data.

Sounds like you're heading back towards silent death territory there! It might be worth your while looking out for a cheap pdf of the SD Next Millenium rules to see how they deal with special manoeuvres and moving.
You don't think you'll habe any luck getting them to move away from hex grids and onto the open table, then?
