Briar on the marsh - a mork borg village.
« on: June 12, 2025, 09:34:50 AM »
I'm running a short mork borg campaign this month with my usual RPG group. They've recently made the switch back to playing in person after being tempted by the false promises of digital tabletop simulators. The group is very much a dry wipe on a battlemap, google images for reference kind of group, but I plan on beating that out of them.

To that end I've decided to make little props and dioramas of any significant locales they visit to help fire their imaginations.

The first of these is the little village of Briar on the Marsh, a fist of jagged rock rising from the feculent swamps, with little hovels clinging to it like barnacles. The PCs will go here to get their weapons (after being released from prison but not trusted enough to carry weapons in the city) and probably have to clear out some horrible visitors from the swampy waters...

The whole thing is built using some of the 15mm cottages I sell (available from mammoth miniatures right now! ;) ) cut up with a bandsaw and covered in potters plaster, carved to give a rocky effect. painting was just kids craft paints in repeated layers, with some dirty down moss for the bright green mouldy patches.

And here it is alongside the original carved plaster masters of the cottages.

making this conjured up memories of my grandads lilliput lane collection. He also collected myth and magic pewter dragons, and I'm now wandering if my entire hobby life has just been an excuse to make my own little houses and dragons...

Very cool little build.

Absolutely wonderful model, and the sense of whimsy is superb.
Just one slight nit-pick, if I may? How do the villagers get down? Do they fly, or maybe climb down other houses to get to bottom?
Othwr than that, great stuff - wish I'd thought of it first.

They scramble over the rocks like the swamp dwelling oddballs that they are - Or they use the staircases that run through the rock like a rabbits warren.

The starting point for my unfortunate PC's will be here, the small harbour of wightport. Once a thriving merchant port nestled at the foot of the great cliffs upon which the mighty city sits, it has fallen into disrepair in the last few centuries. The sea has turned to bog and within its murky waters the ruined hulks of the royal fleet still sway and groan. Now wightport is little more than a stop off for those seeking to journey out into the great marsh sea.
As my PCs will begin the game as prisoners, they won't have any possessions to their name. They will have to buy them here from the merchants and seamen of the port, before finding themselves some transport.

Wightport has no buildings - instead the market square is surrounded by dark alleys carved into the cliff face, inside which are all manner of chapmen and smugglers ready to swap swords for silver.

Just fantastic.
Had you been born in Naples a century or two ago, you would have been a master presepe builder appointed to the royal court.

You know I often think that if I had to live in the past, I should like to be the toymaker to some minor Royal patron and spend my days making lead soldiers whilst going slowly mad. Alas I have to be driven mad by my students instead. The end result is much the same but the journey far less romantic.
