A Larger Great Northern War with Beneath the Lilly Banners
« on: 19 August 2025, 06:11:40 PM »
In the spirit of re-visiting BLB we had a larger Great Northern War Game, using the Talon and Claw Supplement and adding some extra movement to keep things going.

I am being won over with some slight mods to the game rules, we may need to extend Musketry ranges to balance the increase in movement but otherwise feeling quite hopeful

I've said it before but I'll say it again - your game looks stunning. Inspirational stuff.

Great looking figures!

All games with some kind of command roll have the possibility of troops doing nothing much. Getting the balance right between some friction, and doing nothing can be tricky though, and can come down to a few bad dice rolls.

Sounds like longer movement when activated is working, another approach would be to increase activation chance very slightly, perhaps by giving a general a small number of order re-roll tokens (say 3 in a 6 turn game - assuming you are rolling to activate each unit)?

An interesting thought thank you. Yes the way the game works is that based on your roll you can get all, none 25%, 50% or 75% of units activated. A better general gets more activated.

We may also need to consider ranges having tinkered with movement.

OK, so rather than some re-rolls, then perhaps just some bonus activation tokens, so you can activate a small number of extra units across the game. Say 6 tokens, no more than 2 used per turn.

Hi,
The figures look great, and nice to see you using that rules set. I need to dig up my figures and rules for this too and try it out...

Stunning!
And the glorious general led the advance
With a glorious swish of his sword and his lance
And a glorious clank of his tin-plated pants. - Dr. Seuss
