About Solo wargaming (huge list of games)
« on: September 01, 2025, 12:15:20 PM »
A long time ago I wrote an article about solo miniature wargames; back then the list of games barely reached five different titles.

Fortunately things have changed over the years, and many miniature wargames designed specifically for solo play have been published.

That post seemed very useful both for those just starting out in solo gaming and for those who had been playing for a while and discovered a new title.

That post deserved an update, and here it is, hoping it helps you or at least entertains you.

Of course, add in the comments section any solo miniature wargame I might have missed, whether through oversight or simply because I didn’t know about it.

Yes, it is a nice collection of options. I was not aware that Perilous Tales actually has a living community although I really enjoyed the game.

Thank-you for posting this.

The Osprey Book, The Men Who Would Be Kings, written by Daniel Mersey includes a solo play option.
I have not tried to play it but it reads well.

My thanks tereydavi,

As a solo wargamer for and of some years, I have bookmarked this and will peruse it at my leisure later.

I am sure that there will be much of interest.  :D

Extensive and thorough list!

My solo opponent is the WORST. He is a cheat and a liar, moves pieces when I’m not looking, and will do anything to win.   8)

I should warn you, I think he also posts on this forum when you're not around. He's a strange one, alright!  lol

Post updated with many of the games people told me were missing.

There are still more to add, it's just that I don't know some of them and I need to find reliable information about them first.

Thanks for your kind words and your support!

My solo opponent seems to be better player than me...  :( I´m getting used to be beaten in the battlefield...

The Osprey Book, The Men Who Would Be Kings, written by Daniel Mersey includes a solo play option.
I have not tried to play it but it reads well.

That game deals with a setting I´m not interested, so I never gave it a go.
Now that I have been told that it has solo rules I´ll try to get more info about it.

Thanks, mate!

Perilous Tales is a precious hidden gem. When I started playing wargames I usually played pulp games, and Perilous Tales was the way to go (very narrative, free, plenty of scenarios...)

Just have to make a shameless plug for my own stuff as it is Skirmish level like Rangers and 5LB/5PfH, and very specifically for Solo play, and built for playing a campaign rather than a single game.

These are the new Horrendous Gaming Solo Adventure Games series, currently two titles but there will be five by the end of the year.

Available now are the Space Station Security Team version and the Post Apocalypse version.

I once played against my hamster. If he was in the hamster wheel, the enemy choose option A, if he was outside, option B.

Fight Club 2: Fight on the tabletop!  Brad Pitt and Edward Norton playing a wargame  lol

You can make any horror movie into a scenario quite easily!

Thanks for your post. I found it illuminating and informative. I have a number of titles that you mentioned. Some I have played, some I have not. One game that I enjoyed playing solo is Gotham City Chronicles solo-play. Sometimes the good guys win and sometimes the bad guys win. I also mix the avaible heroes up and play the same scenario multiple times with different outcomes each time. I would recommend that game as well.

where can you get Fear of the Dark? the link is to a facebook group and there's only a demo version available there...

EDIT - Perilous Tales is another one... in fact most of the links are to facebook groups. Rather than send folks down that route, could you actually link to the where the game is available?

I was not aware of this Game as It seems to be a boardgame. Looks nice, I'll have a look at It, I have a friend Who IS a Batman IP fanatic. I'm sure he Will know this Game.
Thanks a lot!!

I linked every Game to places where more information could be gathered about them: Facebook groups, author's websites, BGG website... That way you may learn more about the Game you are interested in.

With those links it's not difficult to find where to get the games, nevertheless most of them (if not all of them) are available through wargamevault.

Self-Promotion time.....

I have two solo-games, Under the Martian Yoke, Homer;s Heroes: Bronze Age Bad Boys[/b], Odin's Ravens: Viking Age Bad Boys[/b] and Combat! Starring Vic Murrow which are all available on the Wargame Vault.

I also made solo rules for Osprey's Men of Bronze/Wars of the Republic that can be found in the The Ionian Revolt supplement also on the wargame vault.  You need a copy of one of those core rulebooks to play solo though.
