RCW Flags
« on: 19 September 2025, 07:16:57 PM »
I have had a good look round this section of the forum as well as Mark Plant’s excellent website and finding the information available impressive but also bewildering. I am just after something generic, at least for now. Would a plain tricolour work for the whites and a red flag for the Reds or would there always be a motif or slogan of some sort on the flag?

Does anyone sell RCW flags in 28mm?

I bought mine many years ago from "The Flag Dude" in the US, as he used to visit Salute every year. I think he is still going and he might have a UK stockist. Might be worth dropping him a line .Very nice if now a tad pricey as they are hand-painted.

You can pick up generic red flags and Tricolours on ebay cheaply, I use both of those along with specific unit flags for more well known units. I think with the Bolshevik flag you just need to avoid the hammer and sickle as I think they came after the Russian civil war, but a red flag with a slogan should e  ideal.

The hammer and sickle emblem predated its appearance on the USSR flag, but the official symbol was the hammer and plough until then. The plough is a nuisance to paint though, especially at 15 mm.

The whole topic is, indeed, wildly bewildering, with scattered and inconsistent information and opinions. I'm fighting my way through the Siberian Whites at the moment, and I am soon going to put up a section that gives a whole bunch of uniforms and flags for the south of Russia.

My feeling is that the Russian Tricolour should be the "go to" for the Whites unless the unit was named after a former Imperial Unit, whereupon you can often use the old Tsarist flag. (Vexillographia.ru has a lot of those, but is appalling to navigate.)

For Soviets they should have a slogan or a unit name, often one on each side.

If you give me the units you are thinking of, I can direct you to some information or ideas.

Thanks for the replies all.

I have a 28mm WW1 Russian army of about 100 figures that I am repurposing for RCW using TMWWBKs rules for now. So 50 figures a side skirmish games. Not planning to represent particular units at the moment so hence I thought I would start with generic flags.

RogerC - Can you send me a link to the flags on EBay please, as I can’t seem to find them.

The armchairgeneral, the tricolor for the Whites, and the simple red flag for the Reds are perfectly acceptable, especially if you're looking for something universal.
Although there were situations in which the "Reds" carried the double-headed eagle of the Russian (Democratic) Republic on their banners, and anti-Bolshevik units opposed the Bolsheviks under red banners  :D

Thanks Cuprum  :D  Think my painting skills are up to that.

This is my force so far, bar 4 more infantry being finished off on the painting table at the moment. Mostly Copplestone and the old Musketeer Russians now available from Wee Wolf. They also do nice Austro-Hungarians.

I will probably get some cavalry next.

Copplestone Cavalry are very nice as I am sure you already know, but also consider STP if you can get hold of them, I may have some STP with me at Partizan, Empress do have some Imperial cavalry which are very nice if a little small and delicate but make very nice whites. You can check them out at Partizan.

Thanks Roger. Yes aware of the Empress RCW cavalry which are really nice but I think I favour the Copplestone figures. I like the STP figures I have seen on the Miniature Figurines site. Any ideas where I can view some cavalry?

You can view mine!

I will have units of Don Cossacks, Caucasian Cossacks and Red cavalry mixed in with my Bolsheviks, plus a load of Anarchist cavalry too for the game at Partizan.

I got mine from Empress or Caliver books when they stocked them, and some direct from Studio Siberia. More recently I picked a few packs up from Ebay. Empress still have some STP stuff, not sure about cavalry.

Thanks Roger. They look great figures superbly painted.

Seen what Empress have but no cavalry. I will check out EBay.
