Irish Volunteer Army Dublin 1916 28mm
« on: 21 September 2025, 04:31:59 PM »
I am looking firstly for models in 28mm scale, and also what would be the best Vallejo paint for their uniform. Had thought of using 1914 British as them if i cannot find models, I can find troops for the Irish in Civvys, but my google fu has let me down for the IVA. Thanks

There’s these, I’ve not seen these first hand but others in their Back of Beyond range are OK if a quite bit old-school. Fortunately there’s a good picture so you can make up your own mind.

Wargames Atlantic Resistance figures mixed with some parts from their Great War British infantry would probably cover things pretty well.

What about Gripping Beast's WW1 "Woodbine Design" British with different heads ( they produce slouch hatted heads)]?

Quote from Wikipedia: "On the morning of Monday 24 April, about 1,200 members of the Irish Volunteers and Irish Citizen Army mustered at several locations in central Dublin. Among them were members of the all-female Cumann na mBan. Some wore Irish Volunteer and Citizen Army uniforms, while others wore civilian clothes with a yellow Irish Volunteer armband, military hats, and bandoliers. They were armed mostly with rifles (especially 1871 Mausers), but also with shotguns, revolvers, a few Mauser C96 semi-automatic pistols, and grenades."

So as you can see (from this source at least) it was a very varied crowd! There are also some photos online from parades etc. where this lack of a uniform military uniform in the Irish Volunteers is shown.

From what I have read only the Irish Citizen Army wore the slouch hat while the Irish Volunteers had the traditional military peaked cap.

They are lovely figures but noticeably smaller than 28mm. If that's not a problem then recommended.

Eureka produce a small range of 28mm Portuguese in slouch hats, tunics and boots and armed with Mausers.

The brims on the slouch hats are thin enough to bend with a little care and effort up should you so desire.
