Well, ladies and gentlemen we have reached Day Three on our Belgian adventure and today we look at one of the greatest shocks of the Bltizkrieg era… the fall of Eben Emael!
One did not simply stroll into Eben Emael—at least, that was the Belgian view in May of 1940. Boasting colossal guns, bunkers thicker than Aunt Agatha’s gravy, and a garrison of stout-hearted defenders, the fortress was thought impregnable. Then, from the heavens, down drifted a gaggle of German paratroopers in gliders, carrying gadgets and explosives never before seen in polite continental warfare. To their credit, the Belgians resisted with gallantry, fighting stubbornly amidst shock and chaos. Now, through a delightful new range of model buildings, one can relive this extraordinary clash without anyone dropping onto the dining table uninvited.
