Boshin war - yari armed infantry

I'm currently buildings both sides for the Boshin war. I have seen pictures of Aizu clan spear armed infantry at the battle of Toba Fushimi.
Does someone know what was the part of these troops in the shogun army ?
Did they really fought ?
If so, what kind of figures would you use to represent them in 28mm ?
