First steps on Mars

I've long been a fan of 1889, but never gamed it. 

But now I've finally decided to take the plunge, partly by the great VSF stuff I see on here, and partly because I get to use some of my Deadlands figures for something else. Only grabbed a few new minis so far... I've used Kroot to represent the more savage race that controls the plains and some hills, now I need some canal/city Martians.

Are there any good alternatives to the ones at Brigade, or any figures from other time periods/settings that would paint up nicely as 'Red' Martians? (Nomads, city folk and adventurers).

The human chap is a Reaper Chronoscope figure with a headswap from the 'Not Indian Jones' guy, from the same range.



I went with turquoise/blue instead of green for the savages. Hope you like.

I suppose it depends on the 'look' that you want for your civilised Martians.  Brigade Games now carries the Parroom Station miniature.  Bronze Age has Edgar Rice Burroughs-inspired Red Martians.  Rafm carries the original GDW Space 1889 Martians. 

Fantastic looking figures, btw!  The trews on that officer are excellent.

Great start and welcome to the dark side. 

I'm only just thinking of dabbling in alien races for my off world campaigns so not much help I'm afraid but I'm sure plenty of advice will come along.

All I've collected so far are some Dark Elves from Mirlton which will come in handy as a higher race.

They're not Martians they're Parrotmen of Venus.... grumble....grumble......whinge.... 

Something I'm looking at for Martians are the new plastic Elves from Mantic Games. They're rather thin and spindly which works in making them look very non-human. Their armour has the right 'look' and their Bolt thrower is brilliant and will turn into a rocket launcher or similar with very little effort. I'm hoping they'll be fairly easy to convert into holding rifles, which as they're plastic should be the case. I may well give them new heads too, not sure yet.

Excellent painting. I agree the Parrotmen are fantastic, but I really like the tartan trews on the officer. Very effective plaid

Very good paint jobs.
I am intending to get some Kroot soon but will use them for Venus parrotmen.
I don't see a problem with using them for Martians, this is VSF

Love what you're doing! I've just painted up some Kroot as Native Auxiliaries (Venusian Parrotmen) for my Dutch army, although I put mine in uniform. Your painting style on the Kroot is phenomenal!
