It is non-specific. You can paint it either as his military jacket or as his leather jacket.

Army uniforms were not cool in the '50s. The war surplus look starts with pea coats, bell bottoms and army jackets from WW1, with stand up collars. This is about when the Beatles get enrolled in the Order of the British Empire.

But they -were- cool to Elvis, who made a big deal of his Army service from the time he entered until basically the time of his death. The Army "made Elvis" as an adult man, and he was very proud of that fact. I'd not be surprised at all if he didn't slap on parts of his old Army Uniform and go around the country fighting "bad guys" in the case of Nuclear disaster. After all, he -did- go to Washington DC in the sixties specifically to get a DEA badge and "membership" from Richard Nixon. The guy was all about government, order, etc... not exactly the rebellious youth in the model of James Dean.

Wearing parts of the uniform was considered rebelious by youth of the late 60s, and by the government. It is illegal to wear parts of any issue uniform. The law has been flouted so often its like the law against driving a car on the sidewalk. But in the very straight laced '50s, it was followed. People out of the service didnt want to wear the uniform and the James Dean types had no use for it.
