It works fine, but I think that for me it’s still too close to the original, I can’t look at it and think starwars.

I see your point.  Unfortunately, this is always the case with well known moviestuff..., much like e.g. if one is looking at an Old Guard Grenadier and would only be able to link him to the film "Waterloo".  I know this isn't quite the same, but you get my drift. 

We intend to use the models (there will be some more of them) in a GSF (VSF but starting during WWI, hence G for George V...  :D) campaign, set on an (then) newly discovered planet in our Solar system.  It is up to the strength of the background story of the campaign to make the players view this model as being GSF instead of Star Wars.  I'm sure it will work.

Well by the sounds of that you could convince me. And I do think that if it is used in a game, with more models on the board and it not looking out of place it would be a lot more natural I guess.

I likw the model very much, even if I recognise the SW skiff
I think it fits very well into a declining low-tech background or a very primitive Dieselpunk
