Homework - Burns Cottage
« on: January 19, 2010, 11:11:20 PM »
My 8 year old son got asked on Friday at school to build a model of Robert Burns cottage in time for Burns day. He was told to make it out of a shoe box and use straw or something similar to make the thatch roof. On Sunday he decided to tell us and I was volunteered to help him do it.

Not the usual material I use for building model houses but the card of the box I used wasn’t too bad. I cut out the bits I needed and with my sons help glued it to a piece of hard board.

Used some old towel to represent the thatch. Glued on with some PVA glue, watered down with water.

Once it was all dry we started painting it using some normal house hold paints.
I didn’t want to go to overboard with the painting or the detail as its just for school and it would get wrecked.

If it survives the visit to school and comes back in one piece I will tart it up a bit with some more detail.

The towelling looks remarkably effective as thatch. Definitely worth trying out!

Not bad work for an 8 year old  ;)

Does he also have to eat lots of haggis and neeps and drink copious amounts of single malt - or is that just you?  lol

I just finished a roof using Teddy Bear fur (from real Teddy Bears) and to be honest it was a bit of a pain. The toweling looks great just stuck on!

It's great to see examples of the different materials.

Did he get an A+? :)

A great piece of work.

Accurate too, what is the scale? and will it make it on to your gaming table if it survives the trip to school?

I can't wait for the day Fivers, son of Hammers, comes home from school saying: "Father, I have till next Friday to complete a squad of Gordon Highlanders, 1908 webbing and Wolsleys for our NWF history project. Father, can you help?"

Before his adoring eyes I fold my newspaper and taking the pipe from my moth I say: "Well, my son, this is how you do it..."

Funny isn't it, how it is that kids with Dad's who are model-makers or gamers seem to produce the best primary school projects!  Your son has done a wonderful job.   ;) :D

Believe it or not I don't any of the above. I can't be a true Scotsman.

The towelling is coated in watered down PVA so it goes hard before painting.

He got a head teachers award. Which means good, I think.
A great piece of work.

It is built for 28 mm figures. surprise, surprise  :D

Great stuff!

Reminds me of my daughter's 6th grade project, "Asia".

The teacher, still hatin' the US for alleged atrocities in 'Nam, couldn't get around my daughter's 54mm "Boxer Rebellon" diorama, nor her best freind's "2nd Afghan War" diorama.  (she said "Asia" and we called her on it!).

So Smokey spent much money on CTA 1/32 figs, the girls painted them, and we turned in museum quality dioramas.

(and as my piece da la resistance, we added Teddy Roosevelt leading the legations against the Boxers (he was from CTA's "Rough Riders" figure set) and the  "teacher" believed it as accurate!  LOL!)

We also included Saint "Charlton Heston", and the teacher actually thought he was really at the siege of Peking before becoming an actor!!!!!!!  ROFLMAO!

Anyhoo, I( LOVE that spackle finish and roof!

Good work, kudos to your offspring!
