15mm sci-fi skirmish rules with generic units?
« on: January 28, 2010, 07:23:14 AM »
I own fome 15mm SF minis on separate round 20mm bases. Which rules would you recomend if I want to play with generic units in my own unoverse? :)

Stargrunt II is more platoon-level than pure skirmish, but works great with 15mm and is, these days, available for free from GZG's website. (grab the book, the two counter PDFs and the Quick Ref PDF) I don't think SG2 is actually available in-print anymore, which is unfortunate.

For pure skirmish, I haven't a clue, but nearly any ruleset will work with 15mm figures just as well as 25/28mm!

I like Beamstrike. And the Yahoo group is very friendly, helpful and informative. Recommended.

It depends on how big games you want to play.
If it's large games of a platoon or more, then I'd highly recommend FAD4. If it's small skirmish type games then there's lots of choice. My own Crimson Dust is good for squad or reduced sized platoon sized actions; then someone will probably say Chain Reaction or its variant 5150, though I'm not a fan personally.

Hi!

No Limits is also a good choice for 15mm:

Ive also used everything from Rogue Trader to Star Mogul to play games in 15mm scale and they all work quite well.

I've played Beamstrike, which is very customisable, and each man fires.  Don't be put off by the size of the tables, the game is easy to play.

FAD works well, although it uses squad firepower as opposed to individuals.  A very well thought-out set of rules, easy to get into.  Free like Beamstrike as well.

Here's an AAR for a recent game I played.

Forge Of War is a (Free) set liked by many people especially ex 40k players.  I have read them although not played with them.  IMHO quite light-weight compared with Beamstrike and FAD.

I bought ASL, and didn't warm to it.  Squad firepower combat with very generic weaponry.

Stargrunt II is a very well respected set of (Free) rules.  Read them, tried to get into them, haven't done so yet.  Works well with up to a Platoon a side I believe.  FAD is like a cut-down more accessible version in many ways.

Just my ramblings....

Cheers

The beauty of 15mm is that there are many 'toys' out there that with little work can be incorporated into your army :)  I picked up those Star Wars spaceships for £1 each from a local discount store :)

I've downloaded all Beamstrike Rules foe 15mm platoon (company?) level battles. But when I asked members of Beamstrike Yahoo Group is it good to use Beamstrike not only for big battles but also for small battles (10vs10, say in sip boarding fight between traders and pirates or marines vs Aliens) they told mw that it will  be good if I use 'laserburn' by tabletop games, which is (they say) much more detailed for individual figures.

Does someone played laserburn? What does that looks like and how close it to Beamstrike (I know that Beamstrike evolved from Laserburn and Imperial Commader, as also 40k does)

I used to play Laserburn many years ago.  The rule set can still be bought from a company called 15mm.co.uk.

Here's a link:
http://www.15mm.co.uk/Laserburn_Publications.htm

Laserburn is really a role playing set of rules.  They are fine for a small number of troops. perhaps up to 10 per side (max), in a ship boarding action.  Totally impractical if you want to use more.  They are certainly worth checking out.

Hope that helps

Cheers
