Cuban Villages?
« on: February 04, 2010, 07:33:34 PM »
I was wondering if the collective knowledge of the group could help me out.

We've been toying with the idea of a Spanish-American War game.   I've been checking out architecture for the time period and I see that alot of the buildings in Havana and more metropolitan areas look very similar to New Orleans or Florida.

However, do any of you have any idea what the buildings in the poor country sides of Cuba in the 1900's may have looked like?  Bamboo huts?  Reed structures?  Adobe?  HELP!

I'm pretty sure they had a bit of everything.   Lot's of adobe and brick, all sorts of roof styles, and some     just awful shantytowns narrow urban slums and rural  "slums" of tiny, crowded adobe sprawl.

Also, coral block, especially near the coastline, and rmember that many rsidences and buildings were very  old then..

That's what I have seen in every book on the subject.

In my opinion,    adobe with Spanish tile is a winner for that scenario, and maybe some old wooden farmhouses or out buildings.

Build the Cuban terrain and then use it for the Rum Runner turf wars of the late 20's.

Spanish colonial for most of your larger buildings. Smaller buildings would have been brick or adobe w/thatch or tile roofs, maybe some wood slat or shingles. Wooden buildings mostly would be pole structure with a few wood frame buildings, mostly thatch roofs.
