T Rex found on Guam
« on: 21 February 2010, 08:59:47 AM »
Here is a shot of a T Rex I just finished.  It was part of a set of 4 plastic dinos that I am painting up with my grand daughter.  The dino is actually better than the photo looks but I just don't have very good photo skills.
Got to kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight.

Looks really good - love the colour scheme. Please post more when they're done!

Very nice.
I would put some more light brownish color on the base. Looks to green to me.
The T- Rex is great !

Have a bunch of plastic/oversized dinosaurs too.  I just had not thought of repainting them.  What type of paint did you use and are you happy with the adhesion.

Thanks for the nice words guys.  I am always leery of posting my efforts on this forum where there are so many talented painters.  However, I can see that my skills are improving precisely because of discussions and advice here.
@Driscoles  I agree the base is pretty plain.  I am still trying to get better at basing.  Any advice is much appreciated.
@Major Payne I washed the dino in hot water and dish detergent and then sprayed him with a black primer.  Two coats of primer were needed because of lack of adhesion and even dry had a tacky feeling.  The initial heavy coat of Ceramcoat paint took care of the tackiness and everything was normal from there on.
@Grimm I'm trying to grow some gamers here on Guam - Its a slow process  :D

...the base is pretty plain.  I am still trying to get better at basing.  Any advice is much appreciated.

For my bases I:

Mix some sharp/silver (the really fine stuff) sand into "polyfilla" to create a paste.  (I make up a big container.  Add water often to prevent drying out.)

Trowel this on quite thickly as it will shrink as it dries.
Place random "rocks" into this while still wet.
Once completely dry paint a "light" colour.
Once that is dry wash a dark colour.  ( flood it.)
Paint the "rocks"
Dry brush the whole base with an off-white colour.  I use ivory.

I do all this before I paint the figure as it's easy to touch up the base afterwards if necessary.  And after the figure is completely finished including varnishing I apply grass, etc top taste.   :)

Check out my gallery to see the evidence.  (Unless you have some actual figures to hand.   ;) )
