grand Designs
« on: February 26, 2010, 10:49:07 AM »
I recently got asked to make a couple of buildings for 28mm figures and to keep me enthused I thought I would post a few shots.

The first building is supposed to be a HUGE pyramid type of thing the style the film Apocalypto.  He also wants several smaller buildings to build up the settlement.

The second building is a Norman Style Motte and Bailey, again to have small buildings within the lower section.

Neither are finished and have some way to go before they are but I figured that they are both pretty big building projects that I could share with you all.

Oh the figure in both of them is a Games Workshop Skaven Gutter Runner, just to show scale.
Integrity is non negotiable

Im not sure how 'playable' this HUGE pyramid thing will be.   I'm sure he only wants it as a centre piece for the table and to give the impression that these temples were massive.

I have done a little more work on the Motte and Bailey.  Its slowly coming together.

motte and bailey is very nice... is the ramp to drawbridge ok for minis? looks a little steep for a figure to stay on in some of the pics... small lips on the ramp would stop that and not completely undo all the lovely work...

Nice looking models. The pyramid will look nice in the centre of a remote jungle in the Mayan Riviera or South America.

The Motte and Bailey looks fantastic. My son built one a few years ago for his Grade 4 project. He wanted to build it for scale to use with my LOTR and Medieval miniature games. I should get some pictures of it and post them.

Thanks for sharing.

The motte & bailey are awesome. I guess it's somewhere about 24-30" long? I've grown somehow reluctant of builing such large items (due to a precious lack of storage space), but I think that this one strikes a perfect balance between a playable size, a size that "looks right proportionwise", and is still storable...

Not much done today due to a tiring day at work and cutting my thumb with one of the first cuts of the afternoon.    Doh.

I was hoping to get the two buildings inside the lower complex up to the same stage as the Keep and gatehouse but it just didn't happen tonight.

(Oh the roofs do fit flush on the buildings, I just notice that one of the buildings has its roof at an angle in the pictures)

Not a bad guess.   Its actually 42" x 18"

Ok, thats pretty big. Just a curious question how much does a piece like this cost?

The cost of the materials is not that much, the real cost comes from time and effort I guess.

The MDF base about $5 AUS
The Polystyrene about $40 AUS
Balsa and hard wood used so far about $30 AUS
Foam Core about $10 AUS
Glue about $10 AUS

then there will be flock and basing materials including PVA about $25 AUS
Other bits and Pieces, chain for Drawbridge, Plaster for walls etc about $10 AUS

So about $130 AUS in Materials  (and that's probably a High Estimate)

Add in time and effort and the price tag raises to around the $400 AUS mark.

Well it really is the quality of the work that you pay for. Anyone can go and buy the material, but it takes talent to turn it into something like that! I would've thought looking at the hours used that the work price would be higher than that.
Looking forwards to keeping an eye on this.
