Italian models
« on: March 02, 2010, 06:17:57 PM »
Does anyone know of a good source for Victorian (SF) era in 28mm, about the same size of Empress, Artizan etc etc?

Many thanks

Bicorne do an Italian range in their colonial section, but I've no experience of them myself;

Can't think of any Science Fiction specific Italians, though.
I told you so. You damned fools.

Best I got so far are the Askari miniatures, who have a colonial Bersaglieri range.  Trying to find a european distributor so far.

Problem with Askari is that they are 1930s colonial Italians. Victorian ones looked somewhat different.

I do like the figures, though. I have some myself.

Aye, but I figured that could be easily `down teched` to suit VSF, heck, most VSF was more modern then the Italian army in WW2...  lol

I wasn't meaning the tech so much, rather that the style of the uniforms had changed by the 30s (the Askari Miniatures figures are in shorts for one thing, not very 19th Century that), and the 19th Century Italian sun helmet was a different shape to the 1930s one, more like the Victorian British helmet.

Aye, noticed that on the Bicorne site, helmet is a bit of a killer for me (just like the ww1 pin helmet some have).  Greenstuff hooooo that`ll be (and lots of Askari`s for the bulk of the troops)

edit: after finding this, http://theminiaturespage.com/boards/msg.mv?id=119716 I might take a shot at them, at a pound a piece the `corne`s aren`t that much of a money drainer anyways.

Ok we have discussed the matter some time earlier and noone notice.
There are 2 sources for Italian figures, not mentioned before. Both are Italian firms:
1.- Strattegia e Tattica:
http://www.strategiaetattica.it/miniature_base.asp?tipologia=25mmcoloniale
some 25mm italian colonials
2.- Mirliton
http://www.mirliton.it/index.php?cName=historical-2528mm-italian-indip-wars
Their figures in the range of Italian Independence wars are pure victorian.
Italian uniforms of the era are very colourful.
I cannot recommend about their sizes.

As for other italians:
.- TAG renaissance Papal guard can be used as Papal swiss guards. They still carry ther halberds!
.- some ACW infantry (in Kepi mostly) can be paint modified to represent Italians. Need to study the colours. some good google research will give you more inspiration.
recommend Perry and redoubt Union soldiers for some use. For search use terms like:
bersaglieri, carabinieri, risorgimento etc. they usually bring good results.
.- OldGlory has in their Boxer rebellion range has italian sailors and of course some of their naval artillery crew can also be used.
http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/proddetail.asp?prod=CBP%2D14&cat=228
.- Redoubt has also some in their boxer rebellion range.

As a teaser here is an image with italian uniforms:
